General

  • In the south of France, halfway between Avignon and the Pont du Gard
  • Pool with roomy sunbathing terrace and sun loungers
  • Restaurant, snack bar and shop with wide selection of local wines

Spectacular scenery seekers and aficionados of ancient Rome: bridge both tastes with a stay among the best of both to be found anywhere in France.

The beaut Gard department site of Le Bois des Écureuils is an easy 15-minute drive from the mighty Pont du Gard, the vast Roman aqueduct over the Gardon river that's oh so rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A short drive in the other direction is the  Rhône riverbank city of Avignon, also oh so rightly a famed French UNESCO-listed site for its old centre, medieval Pont Saint-Bénézet bridge, cathedral and papal palace: do be sure your camera is charged for extensive sightseeing trips around both.

Le Bois des Écureuils is a relaxed family-friendly site, mightily conveniently set halfway between the Pont du Gard and Avignon. It has comfy facilities and a friendly team, which organises evening entertainment in summer as well as hiking and other excursions into the scenic southern France countryside.

Facilities include a restaurant, with spectacular views of the river and bridge alongside the site; a pool with roomy sunbathing terrace and sun loungers, and a grocery shop with essentials, local produce and a tastily wide selection of local wines. A snack bar sells cold drinks and ice cream; guests can order fresh baguettes and pain au chocolates too to be delivered in the morning.

Free wifi is available throughout the site.

The pool was clean. Small and nothing liked it looked in the picture!

    Disliked:

As we pulled in Elvis Presley's song ' in the ghetto' resounded iny head... I was expecting tumble weed and a couple of cowboys jump out at me 😳😳😳
Let's start with what was advertised......
Restaurant, snack bar and shop with wide selection of local wines.......... Reality there was no restaurant or anything that vaguely resembles one apart from a few metal chairs and tables that looked as though they'd be better places in a cowboy saloon! The room.was dirty dusty and smelled of stale smoke! Then there was the shop. ... Nope that's right no shop..Just a vending machine that sold cold drinks! And as for the selection of local wines .... I didn't see any only a few discarded empty wine bottles! The evening entertainment consisted of one night a week! (Thankfully it was the night we left as the high pitched whistling of someone trying to set the microphones up had perforated eardrums for a three mile radius!!)
The patio we were shown looked nothing like the website picture.
The showers dated back to about the sixties ( probably the last time they'd seen a bit of jif I should imagine) The toilets .... Well even they looked fed up, just praying someone would demolish them!
The shop nearby is a ten minute car drive as it's too dangerous to walk there. We had to ask the owner to turn the water on so we could fill the Motorhome up.... You'd have thought I'd asked him to pump it from the well 😳😳😳
I was so disappointed and it ruined our last four days. Would have asked for my money back but communication was difficult with my broken French and their total reluctance to attempt English! Resorted to mimes and hand gestures with a couple of pictures to help!
Please think carefully before you stay here!

Local attractions

The excellently-preserved medieval city of Avignon about 20 minutes' drive to the east is a must see if you're anywhere in Gard or the Languedoc-Roussillon region (or indeed the whole south of France).

The city still has its original fortified city walls, part of a vast range of Avignon historical sights including the 11th-century cathedral, the Pont d'Avignon, built in the 12th century, and the famed papal palace or Palais des Papes in the Place de l'Horloge nearby, once the seat of western Christianity in the 14th century.

Spectacular architecture, old churches, an extensive pedestrianised shopping area, and cafés and bars of all sorts also await in Avignon, along with the boutiques, shops and art galleries of the Rue de la Republique. A fine selection of museums is around too: go to check out the Musee du Petit Palais, the Musee Louis-Vouland and the Calvet Museum of Fine Arts, set in an 18th-century townhouse.

Just under 15 minutes to the west is the magnif 50-kilometre length of the Pont du Gard, a famed tourist attraction in France for centuries, and one of the best-preserved aqueducts of the entire Roman empire.
