  • Large, dog-friendly site with a swimming pool and a riverside beach
  • Centre of Anduze and La Bambouseraie en Cévennes within 15 mins' walk
  • Fish or wade in the river; play area and tennis and pétanque courts
‘Sign me up’ is a common sentiment for many people who check out the lush green and shaded setting of Camping Le Pradal in a small town in the south of France. That lovely setting is 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of Anduze, a medieval town that, just like the grounds of the site, has direct access to the river for fresh-water bathing. What’s on your non-negotiable list… dog-friendly? That’s one tick in the box for Camping Le Pradal. A swimming pool? It has that too – and not just any old thing, but an outdoor pool with deckchairs and a paddling pool for small kids. There is also, of course, the private pebbly beach on the Gardon d’Anduze for wading, fishing or skimming rocks. Hobbies-wise, there’s plenty to get stuck into on site too. For kids, there is a playground with a slide, swing, bouncy castle and a sandbox, as well as trampolines, table tennis, pétanque and tennis courts (with rackets for rent) and a games room. Every Wednesday, the site runs a musical evening until midnight with the option of a meal and karaoke, and every Monday evening, it’s bingo night with prizes up for grabs. The fab facilities and the spacious grassy setting with shade from large trees is certainly splendid. Anduze is just as stunning; it has a number of potteries (one of the town’s most famous hobbies). La Bambouseraie en Cévennes, a botanical garden with over a thousand types of bamboo and other plants, is 15 minutes’ walk away. There also are shops and restaurants all around Anduze – how very convenient.

Local attractions

Looking for something strong to sip on? There’s a vineyard and winery on the edge of Attuech (15 minutes’ drive) with drinks originating from the clay-limestone soil. You won’t need to use a car at all on the Steam train of Cevennes (around 20 minutes’ walk), which runs between Anduze and Saint-Jean du Gard, plunging straight into a tunnel longer than 800 metres. There are lots of different views around, from the stalactites and crevices of the Caves of Trabuc (15 minutes’ drive) or the abandoned coal mines of Mine Témoin (20 minutes) to the Roman amphitheatre of Nîmes (45 minutes) and the UNESCO-listed Roman aqueduct of the Pont du Gard (an hour). There’s plenty of history to uncover among those sites, but if you want even more, head to the Musée du Désert (10 minutes) about Protestantism in the local area, Préhistorama (35 minutes) about prehistoric times ,or the Haribo Candy Museum (50 minutes). Aqua Forest (five minutes) has zipwires and toboggans for active families.
