- Family-run farm site with friendly animals in Languedoc-Roussillon
- Carcassonne and the four Cathar castles of Lastour within 50 minutes
- Forest trails, river walks and swimming from the site
Fancy forest trails, river swims and friendly resident pigs? Waterparks, gorges, mountaintop castles and wanders round ancient cities in south-west France? Sounds like you want Sautadou Camping, a lovely spot in Languedoc-Rousillon, a minute's walk from a river and a half-hour's drive from the city of Carcassonne.
This is a peaceful and friendly farm site, with pigs and other resident animals to meet and pet... and a setting surrounded by well-signed forest trails and suitably close to the Lauquet river for bankside strolls, swims and picnics.
Amenities include hot showers and disabled access in the washrooms, a washing-up area for pots and pans, and a spacious communal barbecue area. With all the basics looked after, you can get on with enjoying the fab views of the surrounding hilly countryside, and deciding what to do in it first... then next.
Shops, supermarkets and eateries are in Carcassonne, but this fab place is more than a stop for refuelling and stocking up. Take a day trip or two to the medieval walled city to stroll the winding lanes of the old citadel, visit the 12th-century basilica and take a boat cruise down the Aude.

Local attractions
You've got a couple of further options if you've found your forays on the river just fab: stay on it, and sail 100 or so kilometres east to the Mediterranean, or perhaps more practically, take a 40-minute car trip to the Raymond Chesa leisure park at Cavayère lake, where there are inflatable obstacle courses, slides and flumes in a waterpark, waterskiing, swimming and suntanning on the lake and its beaches, and treetop zipwiring thrills in the surrounding forests.
To explore the history of the area, you can't get much better than a day spent up at Lastour (40 minutes) whose craggy hills are dominated by not one but a quartet of Cathar strongholds from the 12th and 13th centuries. Heading back further in time, visit the Roman baths at Rennes-les-Bains, or go back a few million years before at Dinosauria Museum, both an hour away.
Further off, but very doable in a day and definitely on the list for Dan Brown fans, Cathar seekers and those just into castles and cracking scenery, the high fortresses of Peyrepertuse and Quéribus and the Gorge of Galamus are all about an hour and a half's drive away.
