It appears that they’re doing everything right at Camping Les Brugues, a peaceful and family-friendly spot in the Aude that has flourished since 1980. Currently run by the third generation of the same farming family, it’s five minutes’ drive from the hilltop town of Fanjeaux and 35 minutes from the medieval wonders of Carcassonne, so location may play a part here too. Surrounded by fields grazed by sheep and edging a fishing lake, the campsite sits in woodland 500 metres from the family’s farm. The grass pitches are all tucked under mature trees for shade (some have electric hook-ups) and handy facilities include a play area with climbing frames and swings for the young, and a communal eating/drinking/chilling area for the whole family, where you can also pick up tourist information to inspire local days out. As well as organising weekly evening meet-ups over local aperitifs, owners Nadine, Cédric and Luc run tours of their farm, where the kids can cuddle rabbits, chickens and pigs, and you can learn more about the dairy sheep, whose milk goes to producing the Languedoc’s tangy AOC Roquefort cheese.

Liked Small site on farm only 25 pitches, pitch next to lake caught 2 nice carp & a lot of little fish, surrounded by farm fields lots of tree cover & very quiet loved it only there 2 nights wished we had stayed longer will definitely go back, good sanitary facilities clean hot showers with seat & hook toilet paper & seats

Keen walkers will be pleased to learn that days out can start from your pitch, as three hiking trails pass close by, but in fact you don’t have to leave the site at all to have a jolly good time. There are facilities for riotous games of football and basketball, and don’t forget the lake, where you can fish from the banks or go boating and swimming. Still sticking with water-based activities, hire barges to potter down the tree-shaded Canal du Midi from the Port de Bram (15 minutes’ drive), or learn how to sail at the waterside club on Lac de la Ganguise (35 minutes). For a deep dive into the history of the Pays Cathare, have a look around the hilltop castle in ancient Fanjeaux (five minutes), or head for Carcassonne (35 minutes) to walk around the medieval ramparts, have a wander around labyrinthine Bastide Saint-Louis and take a look at the priceless religious treasures on show in Notre-Dame de l’Abbaye.
