  • Family-friendly site between beaches, vineyards and historic sights
  • 35 minutes’ drive to Carcassonne, with UNESCO-listed medieval citadel
  • Pools, waterslides, bar, restaurant, playground and entertainment
Sandy strolls, vineyard tours and historic sightseeing – you can do it all with a stay at Camping Le Pinada, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Fabrezan. Le Pinada is just outside the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée Natural Regional Park, which means beaches and vineyards to visit, lagoons to navigate, wildlife to spot and hiking trails to conquer, as well as a bunch of historic sights to admire. The site's location in a pine forest also means there are plenty of walking and mountain bike trails in the area too. When you’re not out exploring this part of the Aude area, make the most of the pool scene back at base for relaxed times – there are three outdoor pools, including a paddling pool for the kids and a fun pool with waterslides. If you don’t fancy your turn zooming down the slides, get settled on a sun lounger around the pool for some chill time (ideally with an ice cream from the poolside bar?) There’s more activity to be had away from the water, with a couple of pétanque courts, a multisports ground and a play area for the nippers. And the action continues in the evening, too – the team sorts out such sociable events as karaoke, dancing and themed evenings for everyone. To feed yourselves for all this activity, order bread and pastries to be delivered for a tasty breakfast, then settle in at the restaurant for meals later on in the day.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Countryside feel. Could hear frogs, nightingales singing. Lovely views from campsite to the Pyrenees in the distance. Clean facilities, friendly owner. Large pitch space.

Disliked: I only dislike having the mixed shower and toilet facilities BUT this seems common in Languedoc since most of campsites we stayed at had this arrangement. It is not a criticism of this campsite, just an observation that this is how the shower block is arranged! Would recommend the site to everyone as being clean and unspoiled.

Local attractions

It’s heavy on historical sights around here, so get an injection of culture at the Romanesque Abbey of St. Mary of Lagrasse (20 minutes’ drive), or tick off a couple of the Cathar castles with visits to Château de Termes and Châteaux de Lastours (both 45 minutes). Continue your history lessons in the centre of Narbonne (half an hour) with stops at the Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur and the Palais des Archevêques (Archbishop's Palace), the latter of which houses archaeology and art and history museums. On the outskirts of the town is Abbaye de Fontfroide (20 minutes); get a good glimpse of the abbey’s architecture and amble around the gardens and trails. Wine is produced here too, so leave some time for a tasting. Narbonne also has a beach (45 minutes), so you can follow sightseeing with some lazing on the sand. There are more sandy spots to settle on in seaside resort Leucate (45 minutes), as well as a marina and a waterpark. If you’re looking for more kid-friendly days out, the 300-hectare Réserve Africaine de Sigean zoo (25 minutes) is a fine choice, as is a visit to Carcassonne to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cité de Carcassonne (35 minutes).
