  • Quiet, riverside and family-friendly campsite in the Essonne region
  • A 20-minute drive to Fontainebleau Forest and Massif des Trois Pignons
  • River and pond fishing, play area, trampoline; shops 20 minutes’ drive
If you’re after a country weekend away from Paris, an angling break within walking distance of a river or a family holiday with lots going on to keep kids occupied, then you have three very good reasons to look at Le Cattiaux Camping, five minutes’ drive from Courdimanche-sur-Essonne in the Essonne department. Boutigny-sur-Essonne railway station – from where trains connect with Paris in around an hour – is also five minutes’ drive away from the site, which sits next to the Essonne river and Belésbat Pond, known for barbel and carp fishing. And as for the kids, well, there’s a trampoline, pool, table football, pétanque and ping-pong available, as well as a playground with climbing frames for toddlers. Plenty, then, to keep them busy for (hopefully) days. Barbecues are provided (pick up provisions in Boutigny-sur-Essonne, five minutes’ drive), and there are washing machines and dryers in the amenities block to make sure everyone keeps looking their best. The nearly 10-acre rural campsite is dog-friendly too, and surrounded by woodland criss-crossed with footpaths for exercising your pets (and the kids, should they need more distraction). And as well as fishing in the river or Belésbat Pond and an 18-hole golf course (five minutes’ drive), there are climbing, hiking and horse-riding routes in Fontainebleau Forest (20 minutes).

What customers say

This is a friendly campsite with spacious pitches and clean, well-maintained facilities, including en-suite shower and toilet cubicles. Many guests highlight the welcoming and helpful staff. It's considered good value and ideal for stopovers, with easy train access to Paris. Some visitors noted a lack of entertainment or activities on site and occasional issues with supplies like toilet paper. A few guests felt it wasn't ideal for motorhomes and one reviewer reported a negative encounter with a staff member regarding late entry.

Electric optional grass and earth tent pitch

Liked We booked and paid for our stay at Le Cattiaux Camping before reading the reviews. After reading previous reviews, we had mixed feelings about our stay at Le Cattiaux Camping. However upon arrival at Le Cattiaux Camping, any worries we may have had quickly faded away. Upon arrival we parked our car on the left outside of the electric gate and walked down to the office, here we met Xavier. Xavier only speaks French but was always nice to us. He directed us into the office where we met Amandine. After using my French to indicate that we had a reservation and who we were, Amandine replied in English. Amandine speaks very good English but I would try to talk in French when I could. Xavier showed us to the spot where we would be staying. To our delight and in contrast to some of our worries with regards to previous reviews, we were delighted to be given our own private riverside pitch with our own electric supply and a charming little apple tree. The facilities are good, the toilets, sinks and showers were all clean and well presented. There are washing and drying facilities on site. It is €5 for the washer and €5 for the dryer. They are token operated and you get the tokens from Amandine at the office. We also got a washing pod with the €5 token for the washer. It is a pleasant 15min walk from the site, over the river and over the train tracks into the local village of Boutigny-sur-essonne. The village has a lovely little bakery, a pharmacy, a florists, a train station, a restaurant and a bar/tabac. Although we never saw the bar/tabac open. There is a market on the carpark of the train station on a Saturday morning where you can buy veg, meat, bread and cheese. It is very easy to get the train from Boutigny into the centre of Paris and takes about an hour. During our stay at Le Cattiaux Camping there were several friendly cats on site, who our daughters loved befriending and giving plenty of loves to. From our riverside pitch we saw water voles, kingfishers and what we think were some kind of possibly wild goats or sheep. So, we would describe it as a good location for wildlife. Whilst on site, both Amandine and Xavier were both nice and pleasant with us. Whilst at Le Cattiaux Camping, the site was always quiet and peaceful. Given our riverside pitch, we would stay here again.

Disliked These are not dislikes as such as we fully enjoyed our stay at Le Cattiaux Camping.

Please remember to bring your own toilet paper and hand-wash with you for the toilets and sinks as these are not provided on site.

If I'm being overly picky. The grass on our pitch would have benefited from a mow and the edges strimmed before we pitched on it. The gravel area on our pitch for parking the car would benefit from a little weed control.

We picked Le Cattiaux Camping due to its locality to Paris. We stayed for 3 nights in our large family tent with our 2 teenage daughters. Any longer that our 3 nights and our daughters would probably have started to get a little bored on site.

Electric optional grass and earth tent pitch (two person)

Liked Vriendelijke ontvangst. Rustige camping en genoeg ruimte om je tent op te zetten op het veldje. Prima voor een nachtje als je onderweg bent. Er is verder niet veel te doen.

Liked Nothing

Disliked The man in charge is extremely unpleasant, aggressive and rude. Having given us the code to the big security gate, he failed to mention that it would be non functional after 10 pm so we were unable to re enter the camp site . He appeared to find this amusing and was happy to abandon 4 women alone in the dark. It was a very disturbing experience and I could not recommend this site to anyone.

Local attractions

Anyone wanting to tick some impressive châteaux off their sightseeing list can head for Fontainebleau Palace (half an hour’s drive) for guided tours of royal apartments and exhibitions about Napoleon I, while the castle at Domaine de Courances (15 minutes) has a spectacular Renaissance-era water garden to explore. Arty types should make a point of visiting ‘Le Cylop’, a massive Jean Tinguely sculpture located in forest near historic Milly-la-Forêt (both 10 minutes), where you can see a 15th-century covered market as well as artist Jean Cocteau’s frescoes in the medieval Chapel of Saint-Blaise-des-Simples. If climbing is more your style, the Massif de Fontainebleau (20 minutes) has rocky sites suitable for all ages and abilities. Experts get stuck into bouldering at Rocher Cuvier Châtillon (45 minutes), or scale steep cliffs in the Gorges d’Apremont (half an hour). Families can follow hiking trails through the Gorges de Franchard (40 minutes), and there are several climbing circuits – from easy to challenging – in the Massif des Trois Pignons (20 minutes).
