  • Leafy family campsite five minutes’ drive from Louviers in Normandy
  • Biotropica animal park 25 minutes’ drive; Jardin de Monet 45 minutes
  • Swimming pool and play area; restaurant and bread delivery in summer
A handy stopover between Paris and seaside Deauville at roughly an hour’s drive from both, Camping les Escales also makes a wonderfully peaceful base for longer explorations of Normandy. Whatever your holiday plan, this leafy spot on the outskirts of the lively town of Louviers has lots of family-friendly amenities and a thoroughly laid-back vibe that will tempt you to linger on site. Neatly manicured grass pitches are divided by trees and hedges, ensuring everyone has plenty of privacy. If you forget anything for the kids, hire gear like high chairs and folding cribs from reception, and you can keep everyone neat and shiny thanks to the token-operated washing machine and dryer in the laundry room. Kids can scoot around happily at the play area, and you can all get together as a family to play pétanque or have a splash around in the heated outdoor pool. Saturday night is party night in high season, when the on-site catering service also ramps up, with bread and pastry delivered each morning, breakfast served at the snack bar and a steady supply of kids’ favourites like burgers, chips and pizzas available all day. Should you need anything else, there are supermarkets, delis and a pharmacy in the cobbled streets of Louviers (five minutes’ drive).

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The swimming pool was really pleasant, although it closes at 7pm, is small for the size of the site and has a strict tight trunk policy. Located close to a pleasant-looking town and close to Rouen and the route to Calais. The trees are pleasant and there is potential for it to be a decent site, if managed properly, and improved.

Disliked: I write this review in the interest of warning families to think carefully about where they stay... This site seems to be run on a shoestring and skeleton staff. On arrival we were kept waiting until the manager eventually appeared and then struggled to find our booking. He then allocated us a very small plot for our large motorhome and pointed to where it was. (In fairness he later saw me and said we could choose another, but we had already set everything up by then.) He didn't provide any information about the site, I had to ask later. The manager appears to attempt to do it all himself as he was the only staff member we saw. As a result, the place looks run-down and the very limited facilities are lacking hygiene. Our block contained one toilet (without a toilet seat which isn't unusual) and one dirty shower which soaked everything in there, and had a button that required pressing every four seconds. Nothing is allowed to be flushed down the one toilet and there was one disgusting little bin, overflowing with used toilet paper and sanitary products. The worst thing was lifting the lid with your hand to place items in it. I saw the manager enter the toilet the next morning, phone pressed to his ear and a mop in his hand. He was in there maybe three minutes maximum. I went in after he'd vacated to see that he had not emptied the bin - disgusting!! A breeding ground for germs in such hot weather. We feared getting a bug. There was one little push button water tap to provide water for many pitches and the electric points were few and far between. There was general untidiness around the site, such as a broken down bus with tarpaulines and pallets strewn around it. A man hole cover, close to collapse, lay next to the path, with just a cone placed on top. Extremely dangerous to inquisitive children. These faults aside, we saw that the restaurant was open and thought it would be really handy to go and have a nice meal. We headed over at shortly after 8pm and saw two men outside enjoying a drink, and a couple inside eating a meal. I went to the bar to be told by the manager that the kitchen was now finished! Why? I enquired. The board says open until 10.30pm. No reason given. I will now describe the horror to follow overnight. When we went to bed, two couples with two cars and a tent crammed on to a plot behind ours, were having a bit of a party. This became increasingly rowdy and unpleasant as the hours passed by. At 2.30am a huge fight kicked off between two women. one was screaming and crying, the other shouting, while things were being thrown and smashed. All very disturbing. Finally the noise died down around 3.30am. When I complained to the manager the next morning, his response was that he had no control of people who don't abide by the rules. Frightening! I have since taken the time to read other reviews and I'm alarmed to learn that this night time rowdiness is a recurring theme on the site. Clearly, this security issue needs addressing. I couldn't possibly recommend this place to anyone at this moment in time, especially not families.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely clean pool, large shady pitches, owner always available and helpful. The site is really nicely laid out and we had one of the pitches in the middle section which was huge with only 5 pitches. It was more or less level and had electricity. Excellent value for money. There was also a little bar/restaurant and although we only had a drink the food on the next table looked really good.

Disliked: You had to keep your hand on the shower button for any water to come out which was a bit annoying when trying to rinse your hair.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site, very private pitches with plenty of hedging and trees for shade. Heated pool on site (open 10am- 7pm) spotless and well maintained. Friendly helpful staff. Girl in restaurant spoke very good English. Able to order fresh bread, croissants for the morning.

Disliked: Restaurant / cafe very tired and dated looking from outside. A little off putting, but it was really lovely inside. Water supply not clearly found.

Local attractions

In the (unlikely) event that the kids should tire of the swimming pool, they can have a romp on the go karts, treetop climbing courses and bouncy castles at Tolysland amusement park (half an hour’s drive), or get down with the red pandas and lorikeets in the glasshouse at Biotropica (25 minutes). If you all need to run off some energy, the indoor themed games at Urban’Paintball (20 minutes) should do nicely. For a dip into local culture, check out the half-timbered medieval houses, the ornate flying buttresses of Gothic-era Church of Notre-Dame and crumbing remains of the Cloître des Pénitents in Louviers (five minutes), sitting prettily on multiple channels of the River Eure. Learn more about the town’s textile-making past at the Museum of Louviers, with its displays of old weaving looms side-by-side with Impressionist paintings. Talking of the Impressionists, a 45-minute drive sees you at the spectacular and famed Jardin de Monet in Giverny, where you can spot the waterlily pond and bridge that featured in so many of the artist’s paintings and have a nose around his studio.
