  • Peaceful 10-hectare site on the banks of the Seine in Les Andelys
  • A 25-minute drive from Monet's garden at Giverny and 50 from Rouen
  • Pool, playground, fishing lake, bike hire and bar-restaurant
Well, if it's good enough for three kings, that sounds like a fine start, non? If any royals did indeed happen upon Camping L'Île des Trois Rois they’d surely find the location most pleasing, for this 10-hectare site is in a stunning spot on the banks of the Seine river and a leisurely 10-minute stroll from the shops and restaurants of Les Andelys (eats an easy walk away being a real bonus if you’re wearing velvet robes… or taking the small sorts out for a crêpe). The good life awaits for all guests here, princely background or not – days on site can be spent fishing/daydreaming by the river or fishing lake, swimming in the heated pool, perfecting your pétanque pitch or playing games of badminton and table tennis. Pint-sized princes and princesses have been given their own castle to play in – a giant inflatable one whose estate includes a decent amount of playground kit too. In summer, you can source eats and drinks on site at the bar-restaurant, then stick around to strut your stuff at one of the dance evenings. For other foodie demands, you may like to hire a bike on site to pedal up to town; you can also use it for bit of riverside roaming along the scenic cycle path that skirts the side of the Seine.

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked Pitch sizes very good, sanitaires very clean and modern. Site very well kept and tidy

Disliked Very busy site and noise went on well past 11 o'clock at night and sometimes later with young children running around and playing football in empty pitches late at night. There was a big shortage of water points, some people having to walk a good distance to access water

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked The setting is nice

Disliked The staff especially the one behind the till are rude and obnoxious. We ordered some drinks two pints and two cokes for the kids . She dropped the cans on the floor they bounced in the air dented them and expected us to open them (they would have exploded ) she was really rude at changing them . I was ever so polite and thanked her for my meal and she didn’t take me on turned her back and walked off sticking her thumb in the air . We asked for a baby chair and had to clean it ourselves it was disgusting . The life guard is really rude

Local attractions

If in any doubt about the top local attraction, look up: Château Gaillard towers over the place from 90 metres up, as it has since the late 12th century. It's all in ruins now, but very much worth the hike up for some splendid views over the Seine. There are several more handsome historic buildings around town if you fancy taking a tour, and the World War II-themed Musée De Tosny is a five-minute drive away on the other side of the river. History’s seen a long list of famed names come this way for artistic inspiration – if you're in need of a little of that, plot a course for Lyons-la-Forêt (25 minutes' drive), a pretty little village that’s provided fodder for Renoir’s paintings and Ravel’s music. Anyone who’s ever admired Monet’s paintings of water lilies won’t want to miss a trip to Giverny (25 minutes) to see the gorgeous gardens in real life. Vernon (20 minutes) and Rouen (50 minutes) are also worth a trip for those that can't get enough of the history of the hereabouts. Should the nippers be tiring of such outings, venture to Val-de-Reuil (half an hour) for a zoo, an indoor play park and a lake with beach and watersports centre.
