Active nautical types can get out on the Tyrrhenian Sea to try their hand at sailing, kayaking, kitesurfing, scuba diving… all manner of activities in the turquoise waters. Back on terra firma, daredevils of all ages whizz down waterfalls and gorges in Isula Canyon (20 minutes' drive), while families venture out into the maquis on horseback (there are riding stables within 10 minutes’ drive) or mountain bike. Want to get out into wild Corsican countryside? Stroll to the stumpy remains of Tour de Diana defence tower (half an hour) by the Etang de Diana salt lake, or up the hiking challenge on the network of trails in the foothills of the untamed Monte Rotondo Massif Nature Reserve (an hour). Corsica Natura also makes a cracking base for discovering the cultural heritage of the Oriente region. Head up into the mountains to visit quiet villages dotted with ornate baroque churches like the Église Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul (45 minutes) or Chapelle Saint Pancrace (55 minutes) with its Romanesque origins.
