  • Quiet and leafy family site on the side of Lac du Der in the Marne
  • Multi-use path round the lake; Vitry-le-François about an hour by bike
  • 100 metres from a lakeside beach; pool and snack bar in high season
Well, Camping de la Foret is certainly very aptly named. Sitting five minutes’ drive from Arrigny in the rural Marne region, this laidback family hideaway is well sheltered from the summer sun as it’s tucked under a canopy of mature trees. The site is also slap bang on the side of Lac du Der, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. About 100 metres through the trees from the accommodation is a sandy beach, where you can swim, fish or practise watersports and let younger kids loose on the playground. If you’re not a fan of swimming in open water, there’s also an outdoor pool on site, open from mid June to August 31. The informal snack bar also opens in high season, but you’re only a short journey by car from cafés and pizzerias in Arrigny if you’re staying outside peak holiday time. Lots of landscaping and hedges round and about the site keeps pitches nice and private, and there’s a designated washing-up area as well as a launderette and drying room for keeping on top of the chores.

What customers say

This peaceful, woodland campsite offers a great location near a large lake with cycle routes and beaches. Guests appreciated the friendly, helpful staff, well-maintained pool area, and shady pitches. Facilities include warm showers and washing areas. Some found pitches varied in size and ground could be hard for pegs. The site can be busy on weekends.

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked Good location to access the lake. Pool is good for toddlers & clean.

Disliked Poor pitches for tents - all on hills of around 8-10% gradient and gravel. Site is under construction - with early starts and late finishes. Confusion with pitch allocation. Had a very poor experience with the ‘restaurant’ 40 minutes before someone acknowledged us & then it took 2 hours for 2 pizzas & 2 drinks on a Wednesday!? Drinks orders were wrong and we were charged for the more expensive options - very disorganised ordering system & staff were flappy and dismissive. Staff were not able to cope in what they claim, and know, to be ‘peak season’ (the site was probably half full). Half expected us to be caught by Gordon Ramsey filming Hell’s Kitchen!! Toilet blocks only cleaned first thing in a morning and water is cold by mid day. Generally dirty camping areas - previous occupant had left cigarette butts on our pitch. Booked an electric pitch, were offered one with out electric… went on a walk round the site with a one year old to try and find a free spot - found one. 1/6 of the electric ports worked & we woke up one morning to our fridge being off. Noisy campsite with late night noise from a huge party that arrived - 8/9 pitches including family tents, boats on the backs of additional cars & their own gazebo of around 25ft in length!

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked Great location, right next to a big lake with a beach and boat hire.

Disliked We were greeted at reception by someone saying that our caravan was too long and that we wouldn't be able to stay. Pitch up states no twin axles however our caravan is a single axle. In the end they let us go on a pitch and we managed to fit the caravan on it. Secondly, as another reviewers points out, there are no dedicated water points. This is really weird. However the pitch was nice, the swimming pool great and generally enjoyed the stop over!

Liked The Lake

Disliked On arrival, I was told I had to pay a €90 cash deposit. I never carry cash and asked to pay by card—refused. I explained again I didn’t have cash, so he demanded my driving licence instead. It was buried in the boot under all our luggage and bikes, and when I said it would take a while to get to, his arrogant response was, “You’ve got all day.” Unbelievable attitude.

A member of our group had to deal with him because I refused to waste any more time. The furniture in the caravan was filthy, marked, and ripped. Overall, a terrible first impression and an even worse welcome.

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Local attractions

Athletic families will find much to keep them on their toes. You can circumnavigate Lac du Der by bike, rollerblade or on foot along the 38-km multi-use path, adding on an optional extension for cyclists to Vitry-le-François, with its fine Italianate town centre, or Saint-Dizier (both just over an hour by bike), for a meander around the impressive 17th-century ramparts. If you’re chasing still more activity, there’s a treetop adventure course at the sports centre in lakeside Giffaumont-Champaubert (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also learn to sail dinghies, kayak out onto the lake or play hotly contested games of pétanque. When the energy levels of your offspring are waning, they’ll appreciate the chance to cuddle goats, llamas and cute Valais Blacknose sheep at the Ferme Pédagogique du Grand Der (10 minutes). And should you feel like following more grown-up pursuits, Vitry-le-François is the gateway to tastings in the champagne vineyards of the Côteaux Vitryats.
