Jean-Luc and his team are looking forward to welcoming you to family-friendly Charmes en Chalet, set on the shores of Lake Charmes in Haute-Marne, and just 15 minutes’ drive from the fortified town of Langres or half an hour in the car from Chaumont and its impressive 19th-century viaduct.
Spreading over 200 hectares of woodland and manicured gardens, this site offers comfy accommodation in fully equipped and thoughtfully designed wooden chalets with terraces overlooking the lake and sleeping up to 11 guests. Each has all the little comforts you’d expect, like towels and bed linen, ensuite bathrooms and all the basics in the kitchen for prepping simple meals. Luxury extras include hairdryers, a coffee machine and a raclette (fondue) maker.
Around the property, you can use the outdoor pool and sundeck, the barbecue (bring your own charcoal) and sports facilities like a pétanque court, table football (one for the kids) and ping-pong table. In summer, you can also rent pedal boats and canoes from the lakeside beach.
A takeaway service is available, and you can pick up bits for the barbecue or basic groceries from the small supermarket in Neuilly L’Eveque (10 minutes).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.- The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 31/10 (subject to weather conditions).

Local attractions
You may just want to hang around at the lakeside waterspouts hub, where you can hire boats and canoes, swim or go fishing. If that sounds like too much hard work, take a picnic and spend the day paddling in the water and soaking up the sun.
First stop on a cultural day out might be historic Langres (15 minutes’ drive), wrapped in ramparts – from where you can glimpse the Vosges mountain range – and home to a splendid cathedral displaying rare medieval tapestries. Chaumont (half an hour) has a 10th-century castle and a scattering of museums, but its biggest USP is the soaring and arched railay viaduct, built in 1857 and three storeys high.
If the kids are resisting regional heritage, you can take them on hikes into the Forests National Park (25 minutes), where trails lead through woodland and meadows. You might get lucky and see the rare black storks that make their home there, or you can download a local app and try geocaching among the trees. More forest walks can be found at Tufière de Rolampont (15 minutes), where paths lead to a moss-covered petrified waterfall.
