  • Family-friendly site a short drive from Langres and local lakes
  • Peaceful and green setting with flowers and plenty of space
  • Restaurant with local cuisine; shop with local beer, cheese and wine
In what's known as the 'Land of Four Lakes' lies Camping Hautoreille, a peaceful, green place in the village of Bannes in Haute-Marne. Not only is this site a 10-minute drive from lovely Langres, but it's also within a short drive of those four lakes (Charmes, Liez, Mouche and Vingeanne), which among them have chances for activities like waterskiing, wakeboarding, canoeing and fishing. This is the Champagne-Ardenne region, one of the many (many) parts of France stuffed with cheese and wine producers: sample some at the on-site mini market (open in high season), which sells regional products including wine, cheese and beer. Bread and pastries can also be ordered from April to September. And if you need more supplies, the nearest supermarkets are in Langres. Set up a barbecue on site or stroll along to the popular bar-restaurant for more regional specialities; breakfast and takeaways are available from here. And among all that? This is a lush and peaceful setting, in green surrounds with flowers and shrubs placed prettily about. There's plenty of space to wander; countryside walks are easy to access, and bike hire is available if you want to venture further out. Other site facilities include a playground, table tennis, pétanque court and wifi; the washrooms have hot showers, a baby bathroom and a kids' area with small toilets, and are heated in the colder months.

What customers say

This is a highly recommended, peaceful campsite in a beautiful rural location. Guests consistently praise the spacious, level pitches, clean and modern facilities, and the excellent on-site restaurant. The friendly and welcoming staff, particularly the owner, are frequently mentioned. While the site is generally quiet and well-maintained, some guests noted that older shower blocks could benefit from updating. The location is somewhat remote, requiring alternative transport for exploring the surrounding area.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Lovely quiet site in the middle of the French countryside. The pitches were large and reasonably flat. Good facilities, and excellent sanitary blocks - very clean and modern. The bar/restaurant was reasonably priced, with good food options. The bread and croissants were superb - best baguettes and pain au chocolat I have had for many years.

Local attractions

Get ready to sail, swim, canoe, hike or horse ride off all that wine et cheese, at the many outdoor options available locally in the region's four lakes. The closest to the site is Charmes three kilometres away, where you can hire canoes and pedaloes, have a dip, or decide not to be active at all actually, and contemplate the waters from the end of a fishing rod. More swimming, along with waterskiing, wakeboarding and sailing, can be plunged into at Lac de la Liez five kilometres away, the biggest in the region (and again, if you don't want to be active at all thanks, there's fishing for pike and carp, lazy lakeside walks and a sandy beach all to hand here too). The lake at Vingeanne, 20 kilometres away, is a famed birdwatching spot, and Mouche along with Liez and Vingeanne has a hiking route around its scenic shores. Townwise, the fortified hillside settlement of Langres, seven kilometres away, is a popular stopoff in the area, for its cathedral, Navarre Tower and several other ancient sights. You should also walk the town ramparts, three and a half kilometres' worth including seven fortified towers and seven gateways (some sections of the ramparts are over 2,000 years old). Within 20 killometres, more history is at the Château du Pailly, said to be the best example of Renaissance architecture in the Champagne-Ardenne, and at the Faverolles Gallo-Roman mausoleum, built in 20BC… even the kids should like this one. There's also horse riding and a treetop adventure park within 15 kilometres, or you could stick around Langres and enthusiastically sample the town's AOC cheese: best to hike around the ramparts afterwards to burn it all off.
