  • Relaxed, nature-filled site on the banks of Étang de la Vallée
  • A 20-minute drive from the Loire; 40 minutes from Orléans
  • Lake beach, miniature golf, play area and café on site
Slow the pace of life with a stay at Camping Étang de la Vallée, a nature-filled site on the banks of a Loiret lake in the Forest of Orléans. With large shaded pitches and views out over the water, this is a place where you and your family can really relax, perhaps taking a walk in the woods or using your lakeside location for a bit of fishing, watersports or swimming from the lake beach (supervised in high season). If any kids in your party need a bit more activity, send them along to the site’s playground, miniature golf course or games area with table tennis. A café, food shop and bread delivery service are all on hand to provide eats, and barbecues are allowed if you fancy a bit of outdoor grilling. A local produce market is open once a week in July and August to give you a taste of the best of the local area. Other amenities on site include a launderette, wifi, showers and toilets. When you’re not spending your time chilling out on site, there’s plenty to keep you busy in the local area, including horse riding, bike rides and boat trips. Orléans is about 40 minutes’ drive away for an urban day out, or you could head down to the banks of the Loire in about 25 minutes for kayak outings or a visit to Château de Sully-sur-Loire.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Flexibility to do late check-in.

Disliked: We arrived within normal check-in hours and there was no staff at the site. Showers had automatic lights and timing was not changed since summer -> we showered at 20h in the dark. Lights went in an hour later. Bathroom facilities were dirty even though the campsite was pretty much empty, so were not being cleaned daily.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: The location of the site. Adjacent to a lovely lake. Manager friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Pitch not great. Nice quiet location but a bit uneven and lots of cigarette ends. Chemical toilet waste facilities locked, therefore had to travel back to UK ‘full’. Shower facilities ok. Toilets and washing up areas needed cleaning.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: We stayed here for two nights on our way from Calais to Toulouse. We received a warm welcome and were given lots of information as well as the opportunity to buy baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolate for delivery at 9am the following morning (which were delicious!). The site was quiet and peaceful, with level pitches that were spread out and generous in size. We had a lovely, fully serviced pitch with trees and bushes providing shade and a bit of privacy. A lovely little play area was available, as well as a covered area containing giant Connect 4 and other games. They seemed to have lots going on. For example, the night we arrived (Friday) there was a paella van where you could buy a meal. The following evening there was a small craft fair. The morning we left there was what looked like a dirt bike company unloading bikes. So, lots to tap into if you wanted. There were two washroom blocks within 1 minute walk either side of our pitch, each with toilets, sinks to wash up after meals, huge sinks to hand-wash clothes and several stalls to have showers. These blocks were reasonable if a little ‘tired’, but always pretty clean and always stocked with toilet paper, too. One block had toilet seats where the other didn’t, and soap availability was a bit hit-and-miss. The showers were clean though a bit snug. The showerheads were small which made washing my thick, curly hair a bit tricky but they had really good water pressure and were always hot. None of these things put us off using them and none were deal-breakers for us. Just across the road from the campsite there was a large lake with life-guarded beach area, restaurant/cafe, toilets, outdoor showers and a small playground. The children loved playing here and it was clean and peaceful. The day we arrived, we saw people out on paddle boards, pedalos etc, but on our second day it was raining so we didn’t explore these options. Had we stayed longer (or had better weather), we would definitely have done so as it looked very inviting. We went for a walk through the forest and around part of the lake which was beautiful despite the rain! One could easily spend the whole day at this beach as it was a stunning place and very relaxing: definitely the highlight of our stay. We used the Super U supermarket in nearby Chateauneuf-sur-Loire for our food shop, which had plenty of fresh food as well as some local produce. Overall, we were really pleased to stay here and had a restful time as we prepared for our onward journey further south.

Disliked: Perhaps due to the number of people, but the toilet and shower facilities need more regular cleaning. Needs a small shop for essentials forgotten.

Local attractions

There are lots of fabulous places for a walk or bike ride along the trails of the Forest of Orléans, and several local stables can sort riding trips for you too if you prefer. To see the scenery at slower pace, organise a carriage ride in the area around the site, or head down to Sigloy (20 minutes’ drive) for a traditional boat trip along the River Loire. While you’re by the Loire, you can also try a kayaking or canoeing trip (having practised your skills first on the lake by the site) or pay a visit to Château de Sully-sur-Loire (25 minutes), a grand medieval fortress with all the hallmarks of a classic castle (including moat, turrets and ramparts). The Musée de la Marine de Loire (15 minutes) and Fleury Abbey (20 minutes) are good places to visit too if you’re interested in the history of the area. For a full day out, take a trip to Orléans (40 minutes) to visit the ornate cathedral, the Musée des Beaux-Arts and Parc Floral de la Source. It’s worth taking time to meander through the ancient streets too – and there's another lovely lake beach just outside the town if you need to cool off.
