  • Quiet site on an Indre micro-farm in the Brenne Regional Natural Park
  • Walks and cycling from the site; River Creuse fishing 10 minutes’ walk
  • Vegetable garden and livestock; holistic health treatments available
At five minutes’ drive from the tiny Indre hamlet of Ruffec in the Brenne Regional Natural Park, L’Ermitage Inspire is a simple off-grid site set among swathes of wildflowers on an organic micro-farm. Pitching up here sees you surrounded by nature and wildlife – and during your stay you may care to help out in the fields or join in holistic treatment sessions. This is not a site for late nights and loud music; it is a place of quiet contemplation. You can access the pitches by walking in from Ruffec (about 10 minutes on foot), or otherwise drive in to drop off your luggage before parking up in the designated space. The site is scattered with trees, and there are picnic tables and chairs dotted around for some alfresco relaxation. As its vibe is very definitely back-to-nature, there are simple outdoor showers and compost loos available too. You can join in the daily sophrology (a holistic mind-body practice) training on site, with other techniques available to support integral health including speaking circles, sound meditations and donkey-assisted therapy. The owners also offer organic cookery classes and soap-making workshops from time to time. Or how about setting yourself to work on the site’s micro-farm? Depending on the season, it might be planting or harvesting the organic vegetables; there’s always livestock – including free-range hens and the super-cute donkeys – to look after as well.

Bell tent (four person)

Non-electric grass and earth campervan or tent pitch

Local attractions

You can keep active with wild swimming, canoeing and paddleboarding adventures on the River Creuse (10 minutes’ walk), which is also a popular spot for carp fishing. There are numerous hiking trails accessed directly from the pitches; alternatively, explore the woodland and wetland landscapes of the Brenne Regional Natural Park on horseback (15 minutes’ drive to the local stables). To get up close to local wildlife, head for Objectif Brenne (15 minutes), where you can take guided tours of the waterways to see if you can spot herons and Montagu’s harriers. Other birds to keep a lookout for on hikes or bike rides through the national park include stilts and kingfishers. To learn a little about the social history of the region, pay a visit to handsome Château Guillaume (25 minutes), a fortified medieval castle open for tours of its dungeons, chapel and manicured gardens. The Romanesque Prieuré de Villesalem (35 minutes) is covered in ornate stonework carvings and open for visits on occasional days in summer too.
