  • Quiet family campsite on the Creuse river banks in the Indre-et-Loire
  • La Roche-Posay 10 minutes’ drive; Angles-sur-l’Anglin 15 minutes
  • Breakfast delivery service and small shop; pool five minutes’ walk
When one of your group is craving a spa holiday, someone else is mad keen on fishing and yet others want nothing more than to be out hiking and cycling in quiet countryside, what do you do? Consider staying at Camping Les Bords de Creuse in the Indre-et-Loire, that’s what. Why? Well, this family-friendly campsite with tree-shaded grass pitches is on the outskirts of the historic village of Yzeures-sur-Creuse, only 10 minutes’ drive from the pretty thermal resort of La Roche-Posay for spa treatments. It’s also on the banks of the Creuse fishing river for any anglers among you – and the South Touraine greenway trail passes right through the village. If that’s not enough to keep you all busy, within five minutes’ walk of the pitches you can swim for free at the municipal outdoor pool (open in July and August), play tennis or football, and have a friendly game of pétanque with new-found camping pals. There’s also a play area for kids on the campsite, which has a small shop (open in high season) selling ice creams, soft drinks and local wines. Breakfast is all taken care of too, with a bread and pastry delivery service (just remember to order the night before). Any other queries? The friendly staff at reception are there to advise on sightseeing options and answer your queries.

Liked: Lovely site next to a beautiful river. Couldn't fault it. Would stay here again on the way to and from the south. Very quiet in September when we were there. Very good restaurant in walking distance.

Local attractions

Medieval Angles-sur-l’Anglin (15 minutes’ drive) is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France; hike up cobbled alleys to the ruined castle for spectacular views over the Anglin river to forested hills. Rehydrate after your walk with a coffee in the pretty central square, and have a hunt around for bargains in the antique shops while you’re there. Step back in time to wander past half-timbered cottages up to the Creuse-riverside castle in La Guerche (20 minutes) for a wander around English-style gardens and a guided tour of cellars and former prison cells. The sprawling château at Azay-le-Ferron (also 20 minutes) was built over several hundred years, with opulent bedrooms, the library and kitchens open for viewing, along with a delightful knot garden. For a fun family outing, check out the fossils, bones and Bronze Age artefacts in the exceptional Museum of Prehistory at Grand-Pressigny (20 minutes). Other family-friendly days out include the wacky 4D simulator rides at Futuroscope (45 minutes), or the chance to spot bison, wolves and wild boar at the Haute Touche Zoological Park (25 minutes).
