  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven on the banks of the river Cher
  • Direct access to the Loire à Vélo; 20 minutes’ drive from Tours
  • Cyclist-friendly, with a maintenance and repair terminal on site
A trip to The Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, never goes out of style… and neither will setting down on the banks of the river Cher before setting out towards sprawling vineyards and the castles of the Loire by bicycle or car. That’s just some of what you’ll get up to at dog-friendly Camping La Confluence on the banks of the river Cher. If your bicycle is your dear companion, you’re at the right place. The Loire à Vélo cycling route, which stretches from the Black Sea to the Atlantic, is directly accessible from the site. There’s a maintenance and repair terminal on site for cyclists, as well as a breakdown kit at reception. Handily, during high season, those without a ride can rent a bicycle directly from the site too… The Cher river is a charmer, that’ll be clear whether you’re passing it by bicycle or admiring the gentle currents from the campsite itself. Camping La Confluence is in the village of Savonnières, right on the banks of the Cher. The spacious pitches (some shaded, some not, but all with optional electric hook-up) are just a few metres from the river – it’s a wildlife haven here, indeed. Scrub up after any hikes or bike rides using the facilities, which include hot showers, toilets, sinks and a baby-changing area. There’s a washing-up area for dishes and those with reduced mobility also have a parking space reserved. This place is a fab stepping stone for getting to the many castles of Loire or exploring the wine route of the Loire Valley. If you’ve always wanted to visit famed Tours, the aptly-named ‘capital’ of the valley, this is your chance. The town is just 20 minutes’ drive away.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful setting with river, park and bistrot nearby

Disliked: Facilities out of order. Staff cleaning showers at 9am leaving reception empty and showers unavailable. We were also unlucky and had a neighbouring van who played loud music from 1am to past 3am.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Location on the river lovely. Fab sunset over river with low slung boats. Pretty little picturesque village with green entertainment area right next to site

Disliked: Limited sanitation. Shower never did get warm and only one for ladies. Three toilets only - one men, one women and one hole in the floor!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Location is fantastic and staying here offers a little more security that an aire

Disliked: What seems like a new Aire has opened which provides electricity next door so the only benefit to staying at camping la confluence would be to take a shower. however these are in need of a refurb as the site is looking very tired now.

Local attractions

Get your feet moving… with the Petrified Caves (20 minutes’ walk) of Savonnières within walking distance, it’s not long until you will be shouting about the the gravestones, graveyard, pottery and mills left behind by the Romans in the two cave grottoes. The many castles and historic houses of the Loire Valley can easily leave you clueless about which one to visit first, but a sure good starting point is Château de Villandry (five minutes’ drive). The country house has some of the finest gardens around, almost labyrinthian in design. A little further afield is Château de Langeais (20 minutes), a 15th-century Gothic castle with an out-there design. It’ll leave you with plenty to talk over, once again, but save some room in the conversation for the grand moat and exquisite rooms of Azay-le-Rideau (15 minutes).
