  • Family-friendly campsite in a peaceful location by the Cher river
  • Four kilometres from the historic centre of Tours and the Loire
  • On-site shop; fresh bread/pastries daily; municipal pool next door
Peaceful, green and under 15 minutes' drive from the historic centre of Tours, Camping Tours Val de Loire is a popular campsite on the banks of the river Cher in France's attractive Indre-et-Loire department. Guests here have a good range of facilities, are right next to a municipal swimming pool and have the surrounding area's châteaux and vineyards within easy reach. The site is on totally level ground, making arrivals and departures easy no matter what you're driving. As well as essential amenities like toilets and showers, Camping Tours Val de Loire has a handy on-site shop where you can pick up ice creams, snacks, drinks and local products. You can also wander down to reception to chat to the site team about any questions you might have or to buy tickets for some of the region's best attractions (several of which offer a discounted rate for Camping Tours Val de Loire guests). The public pool just a few steps away is open all year round, with a large main pool, a paddling area, a sauna and a sun deck to take advantage of. And breakfast? Between April and October you can order fresh bread and pastries the night before and enjoy them on your pitch.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Pitch was level and hard standing and secure at night.

Disliked: No lighting as you walk to toilets. No soap in toilets to wash hands and no drying facilities after use in men's. All bins outside of gates.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: We were en route to Calais from Spain and this stop over was ideal to break the journey. We intended to go into Tours itself but after the drive we decided to hole up and rest instead. Pitches are large but not particularly private. Nice walks from the campsite along the lake and River Cher. Restaurants are nearby but not were open when we we were there. Charming little village nearby. The toilets and showers were clean with hot water.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Staff were friendly, would stay here again during the summer assuming it would be tidy and ready for campers by then.

Disliked: Campsite wasn’t ready for campers, no lights on the tent sites in the evenings. Only where the camper vans were which was the other side of the site. Had to drive onto the muddy areas around unfinished trailer accommodation which was left blocking the road to the tent pitches. Site was messy and just felt like it was a building site more than a campsite.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Second review. Quieter than early September. Late September, so pitches are now allocated, previously it was free-for-all. Great location travelling back North towards Calais. Easy check-in, and staff very helpful. Quiet location with great walks by the river. Facilities are well used but clean. Early check-out 7am was great

Disliked: Pitches are a little close together. THOSE posters are still up!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: This is the best of the 3 sites in Tours. We were driving South and this was a great location for our second night. Lots of pleasant walks from the site into, and around, Tours. You would hardly know you were in a large city. Easy to get too, and great location by the river. Facilities were good and clean, which was great given some of the previous reviews!

Disliked: This site very much has the feel of a 'transit stop' (through no fault of their own) because it is so ideally suited location wise. This means it is a little soulless as people are wanting to come/stay & go, and so there's lots of movement on the site, with lots of comings and going. Our main complaint would be around the horrific posters in the loos and showers. It is a shame the clientele has so little respect that the site felt the need to put these posters up. NB Overall rating would be higher if we could lose the posters.

Local attractions

Tours is very well set up for outdoor living. In the high season, you can hire bikes at reception and pedal three kilometres to the start of the city's designated bike trail, or you might prefer to just head out along the banks of the Loire river and see where you end up. Keeping things alfresco, there's also a large open-air lido 10 minutes' drive away at Piscine du Lac, while watersports fans can hire kayaks and canoes at Tours & Canoë (15 minutes away). The city centre is rich in history, with half a dozen top-tier museums, art galleries and exhibition spaces to explore. Some of the places you'll definitely want to see include the pedestrianised streets lined with half-timbered houses around Place Plumereau, the ornate Cathédrale Saint-Gatien, Saint-Cosme Priory and the gorgeous botanic gardens. Slightly further afield, the Loire region's many castles are close for day trips, with the site recommending spots like the Château de Villandry (25 minutes), the Château de Chenonceau (30 minutes) and the Château Royal d'Amboise (30 minutes). The area has lots of vineyards you can get to know as well – to sample a wide variety of top local wines, head to the Cave de Vouvray (15 minutes) for one of their tasting tours.
