General

  • Family-friendly lakeside site near Rillé in the Loire Valley
  • Half an hour from the châteaux of Saumur, Villandry and Langeais
  • Canoe, pedalo and bike hire on site, plus organised excursions

Châteaux aplenty, vineyard visits, canoe trips and general pottering around in verdant surrounds… oui, all the classic components of a Loire Valley hol are within easy reach of Huttopia Camping Rillé, a couple of minutes’ drive from the teeny village of Rillé.

Settle in for a stay here and you’ll quickly note the splendidly peaceful surrounds – trees are all around for a bit of shade and the site borders the Étang de Pincemaille lake, giving you not only calming watery views but also a lovely little beach a very short walk away for sunbathing, sandy playtimes and cooling swims or splashes. It’s also a mighty handy place to hire a canoe or kayak and hone your skills before embarking on a lengthier Loire-based expedition (or learn that perhaps you’d be better off with a boat trip navigated by a pro).

This is an enormously family-friendly site that runs a busy programme of activities in summer for guests of all ages – by day there may be treasure hunts, outdoor games and other fun stuff for kids in the mornings, or organised family excursions such as orienteering, vineyard tours or waterskiing lessons. As dusk falls, the social whirl continues into the evening – canoeing at dusk, perhaps, or an open-air movie night, or a live band to listen to/have a boogie with.

Outside of the organised bits and bobs you’ll not want for fun times to keep everyone entertained in suitable manner. Bop balls around at the tennis court or table tennis, practise your pétanque pitch or take to the swimming pool for aquatic antics or chilling out on the sizeable sun terrace (with comfy loungers and parasols to avoid overheating). The smallest guests can also do a bit more charging about at the playground, which has been conveniently placed next to the pool and bar terrace to allow for light-touch supervision.

Even dark clouds don’t dampen the fun here, as there’s a super spot to retreat to in the central building, with a woodburning stove to keep things toasty and plenty of board games, books and a TV area to cosy up in.

Also rather fab at Camping Rillé is the restaurant, open all day for handy breakfasts, coffees, snacks, ice creams or full meals, out on the wooden deck if the weather gods should decree it possible. Hankering after a bit of a picnic on your pitch or in your fave little spot around the site? Restaurant staff will gladly sort you out a pizza to go, and you can preorder bread and pastries for alfresco morning munching too.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 04/05 and 16/10 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Beautiful natural location in forest with stunning lake. Lovely to take canoe out. For very young children probably good safety feature no cars on site.

    Disliked:

A campsite 'without a heart'. Feels corporate with so so service, boring second rate food, and no camp community fun. Nearly all very young babies and children meaning a lot of screaming, no entertainment getting the adults together, and no one for our young teenagers to make friends with. Camp Île de Re is also Huttopia but feels like a Summer festival however which shows Corporate doesn't have to be boring!!

Local attractions

As well as providing beach-based fun, the lake next to the site is a great place for pottering about in boats, which you can hire on site from the collection of canoes, kayaks and pedaloes. A little further along the shoreline is a bird sanctuary that’s home to around 250 species; watch out for birdwatching events in the summer organised by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux.

Just five minutes’ walk up the road from the site is the main station for the Rillé railway, where you can hop on a steam train tour through the surrounding forest. If you’d rather explore under your own steam, there are plenty of walking trails nearby, or you can hire bikes on site to pedal away along the area’s many cycle routes.

Visitors to the area can’t possibly ignore the array of châteaux that are dotted about the locale – Langeais, Villandry and Saumur are all about a half-hour drive away and there are several more within an hour or so (enough garden wanderings, gorgeous interiors and kid-friendly activities to fill days on end should you wish).

The Loire Valley is also of course famed for its tiptop wines, and there are loads of places nearby where you can sample, learn about the process or just frolic through the vineyards. Try the cluster of wineries around Bourgueil (about 25 minutes away) for red wines, or head into Saumur (35 minutes or so by car) if you’re fond of the bubbles.
