  • Quiet family campsite on the Vienne riverside in the Indre-et-Loire
  • Chinon 15 minutes’ drive; Panzoult vineyards five minutes
  • River beach and shop; L’Île-Bouchard restaurants 10 minutes’ walk
Whether you're passing through on the way to Riviera beaches down south or sticking around to visit the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley châteaux with family or friends, Camping Les Bords de Vienne is a low-key, peaceful port of call on the banks of its namesake river in the Indre-et-Loire. Level grass pitches for tourers are shaded by mature trees, and simple family-friendly facilities include a laundry, washing-up area and family washrooms, plus a bouncy castle for younger kids. Stock up on basics in the small shop by reception in high season, which also serves ice cream, cold drinks and wine. For anything else you need, the supermarkets, boulangeries and restaurant of pretty, riverside L’Île-Bouchard are 10 minutes’ walk away. When you’re not out ticking off spectacular sights like Chinon (15 minutes’ drive) or Château de l'Islette (20 minutes), spend some time lazing on the small river beach steps away from the campsite, or take a cooling dip in the river. Swimming is supervised in July and August, when all sorts of activities are available, like kayaking and beach games. One practical word though: this site does not have wifi, so warn any teens travelling with you that it’s time for a digital detox.

Local attractions

First stop on your Indre-et-Loire adventuring may well be L’Île-Bouchard (five minutes’ walk), for its spectacular setting straddling the Vienne river. Have a wander around the ornate St Gilles Church, and then cross the river bridge to the graceful ruin of Saint Léonard’s Priory. More historic buildings await in the Loire Valley, from the hilltop castle and cobbled Old Town at Chinon (15 minutes) to the glitzy glamour of riverside Château de Chambord (90 minutes). Pretty Saumur (50 minutes) has an impressive Renaissance castle, museums of weaponry, decorative arts and er… mushrooms, plus dressage displays at the Cadre Noir. On your way there, make a stop off at the gleaming white, medieval Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud (35 minutes) at the confluence of the Vienne and Loire rivers, one of the biggest monasteries in Europe. To taste some local Touraine wines, head for Panzoult (five minutes’ drive) vineyards, and while you’re there, investigate the sculpture trail leading deep underground in the softly lit Cave de la Sibylle (10 minutes), carved from a former stone quarry.
