What a treat nature lovers and seekers of total peace have in store at Le Clos de la Loutre, a glamping site with just a handful of unusual units tucked deep into the trees, on an island in the middle of a pond, or on the water at a secluded woodland estate five minutes’ drive from Loye-sur-Arnon in the Cher.
Each unit is crafted from wood, with super-comfortable double beds, ensuite bathrooms and comfy seating, as well as private decking outside, from which you can raise your binoculars and search for wildlife.
If you are patient (and quiet) while on site, you may get to see wild boar, deer, pine martens, otters and wild cats going about their daily life around the estate. Please note that due to the number of wild animals present in the environs, dogs are not allowed at this site.
The site owners are deeply committed to the conservation of nature, and all the accommodation at Le Clos de la Loutre has been designed sustainably, with environmentally friendly dry toilets in bathrooms, solar-powered electricity and woodburning stoves to keep you all cosy on cooler nights.

Local attractions
You can try your hand at fishing on the six ponds, or help your kids follow the educational ‘Trail of the Little Otters’ through the woodland and round the water’s edge on the estate. To explore your surroundings in a suitably eco-friendly way, hire bikes and pedal to Loye-sur-Arnon (20 minutes’ ride) following a section of the long-distance Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
When only some urban action will do, jump in the car and head for historic Bourges (50 minutes’ drive) to check out its timber-framed medieval houses, Renaissance villas and soaring Gothic-style cathedral. Have a wander around the city ramparts, and then retreat to a vaulted subterranean wine bar to sample the Cher’s homegrown Sancerre white wines.
To taste some more regional produce, wander the oh-so-peaceful cloisters at Cistercian Abbaye de Noirlac (20 minutes) and take a guided tour of protected farmland around the monastery (summer only) before heading for the shop to stock up on local beers and wines as well as honey made in the abbey’s hives.
