  • Spacious family-friendly site on the edge of Belleville-sur-Loire
  • Boutissant Wildlife Park and Guédelon half an hour's drive away
  • Play area and barbecues on site; guest discounts for local pool
A little bit away from the main tourist hubs along the Loire, Belleville-sur-Loire is a small town that makes a lovely base for exploring the river without the crowds. And just on the edge of town is Camping de Belleville, a family-friendly site with spacious and well-maintained grounds. Just over a kilometre from the banks of the Loire, this site is a great place for some time spent taking relaxing walks or bike rides along the riverbank, trotting through little villages or visiting attractions like Guédelon and Boutissant Wildlife Park. Places like Sully-sur-Loire, Auxerre and Bourges are within an hour’s drive, and the Sancerre vineyards are about half an hour away. Families, couples, solo travellers, groups and dogs are all welcome at this site, where the facilities include a play area, a ping pong table, a fishing pond and a barbecue area with picnic tables (some of them covered to deal with damp days). You’ll also get a discount on the entry fee for the village pool, which has waterslides and a sauna as well as the main pool. Back on site, lots of handy amenities have been provided, including a launderette, a washing-up area, bathrooms and a small shop selling cool drinks and ice creams. A 15-minute walk gets you to a restaurant, a small supermarket or a bakery for breakfast supplies.

Local attractions

You can’t come to the Loire area and not visit a château or two, of course. There are several around the area to choose from, but a particular favourite is Château de Saint Fargeau (half an hour’s drive), which has things like candlelight tours and live music as well as the usual heritage tours. Guédelon (half an hour) is another place that’s well worth checking out – the artisans here are building a castle in the style of the Middle Ages, and you’ll be able to watch them in action. There are heaps more historic places to explore nearby – perhaps Briare (20 minutes) or La Charité-sur-Loire (35 minutes) will take your fancy – and you can learn a bit more about the area at the nearby Maison de Loire du Cher (five minutes). For something a bit different, explore a thousand acres of forest at Boutissant Wildlife Park (half an hour), which is home to native animals like bison, deer and wild boar. And if you’re on a child-free holiday, perhaps you’d like to spend a bit of time touring the vineyards and wineries around Sancerre (25 minutes).
