  • Wild camping near the village of Kerfourn, in the Breton countryside
  • Gulf of Morbihan 45 minutes’ drive; Josselin Castle half an hour
  • Shuttle service on site for the Nantes–Brest Canal
Back to basics in Brittany: a refreshingly simple approach to a fabulous holiday. If wild camping in this area of north-western France appeals to you, you might want to consider staying at Camping Ker Therese, in the department of Morbihan. Surrounded by splendid Breton countryside, this peaceful site with spacious, tree-shaded pitches is on the outskirts of the village of Kerfourn, where a supermarket sells all the bits you might need for a barbecue. There’s also a café here, so you can refuel with a snack before setting out on the pleasant 10-minute walk back to the site with your shopping. Please note: there are no toilets or washing facilities on site, though there is a supply of fresh water. There are also obliging, convivial hosts, who provide a drop-off and pick-up service for anyone who wants to explore the Nantes–Brest Canal (a 10-minute drive away). Just load up your bike or your paddleboard, and set off for a day on/by the water, without worrying about having to find a spot to park your car. For more open water, you can head to the town of Vannes (45 minutes), on the Gulf of Morbihan, to spend a day at the sandy Plage de Conleau beach, with a shallow saltwater pool where kids can splash around. From Vannes, you can also take a ferry to Île-d’Arz, an island popular for swimming, sailing and walking (check out the 17km coastal route).

Local attractions

From gentle amusements (bouncy castles, ball pits and miniature trains) to thrill rides (drop towers, rollercoasters and big wheels), Kingoland (20 minutes’ drive) has all the ingredients for an entertaining family day out. There are also lively performances with acrobats and magicians. From the Nantes–Brest Canal, Josselin Castle (half an hour) impresses with its forbidding stone walls and imposing turrets. However, this 11th-century fortress has another, softer side: an elegant, intricately carved Renaissance façade overlooking a formal garden. Take a leisurely stroll, following the path down to the English garden, where you can stop for a picnic among hydrangeas and rhododendrons. Surrounded by forested hills laced with trails, bridleways and mountain bike routes, Lake Guerlédan (40 minutes) is a large reservoir created in the 1930s. You can have a bash at kayaking, fish for pike or just find a quiet beach for swimming and relaxing.
