  • Small, simple and friendly farm site in central Brittany
  • Josselin five minutes' drive away; next to GR37 walking trail
  • Snack bar and breakfasts on site, plus pétanque and playground
For some people, the wishlist for a family campsite includes plenty of amenities and activities, from swimming pools to kids’ craft and sports sessions. For others, it’s all about the peace and quiet of a stay that focuses on the natural surroundings. If you fall into the latter group, Camping des Cerisiers, five minutes’ drive from Josselin, could be the place for you. At this small-scale site in central Brittany owners Emilie and Mowgli have set things up to be a simple and friendly place to stay – somewhere that you’ll be able to chill out among natural surroundings, take long walks and generally slow life down for a while. It’s not completely without facilities, of course – there are plenty of low-key but lovely ways to fill your time here. Perhaps play a game of table tennis or pétanque, feed the animals or grab a book from the library and find a quiet spot for some reading time. There’s also a playground for the kids, and some evenings have relaxed entertainment available on site. The snack bar (open from early April to mid-September) is on hand to provide easy eats and drinks in the evenings, or you can pick up your own snacks and supplies (at the site shop or nearby) and head to the barbecue area. Morning meals are sorted too, as you can order either bread deliveries or a more extensive breakfast set (both just need to be ordered the night before). A launderette, wifi connection and well-equipped bathrooms are also part of the setup, and you can hire bikes to get out on local cycle trails.

Local attractions

Keen walkers should be in their element here, with more than 200 marked trails in the area. Among the options are waterside walks on the Nantes-Brest Canal towpath, long hikes on the GR37 (which borders the site) and atmospheric woodland trails in Brocéliande Forest (about half an hour’s drive away). Exploring doesn’t have to be on foot – the area around Josselin also has plenty of cycle paths, plus options for kayaking, canoeing and electric boat outings. Over in Ploërmel (15 minutes’ drive), Étang au Duc has walks, cycle trails, boat hire, fishing and golf, and it’s also a nice place for a cool dip on a warm day. You’ll also certainly want to visit the fairytale-like Château de Josselin (five minutes), look out for the astronomical clock in Ploërmel and take a trip to Vannes (40 minutes), with all its half-timbered houses. Save time for smaller attractions too, like Écomusée de la Ferme et des Vieux Métiers, or the insectarium and scrap metal art in Lizio (all 15 minutes).
