  • Family-friendly campsite near La Pointe de la Torche
  • Covered swimming pool
  • Friendly atmosphere

We may have waxed lyrical about the fab Finistère coast before. But oh in what a cracking position is Camping Kerlaz, a drive of mere minutes to an eight-kilometre long sandy beach, protected by dunes and a top local choice for surfers, kitesurfers and swimmers: you may at this point want to take un moment or two to check out the site pics…

Kerlaz is a small and family-run site, set in an area of hiking, cycling, horse riding and a whole heap more; it's also near the famed birdwatching lake of Trunvel lake, so bring along your binoculars. (And your wetsuit, for a surf school is at the nearby beach.)

The site has a pool, covered or uncovered depending on how warm the day, as well as a play area, table tennis and – we like – a converted touring caravan used as a reading and games room. (We would like one of these in the back garden, si'l vois plait.) Takeaway such as mussels and crêpes is available at the campsite in the evening.

Lovely site, clean facilities, friendly owners 21/06/2016

We stayed at Camping Kerlaz for 7 nights in early June. The campsite is lovely, the toilets and showers are clean (though no toilet seats which isn't unusual for France) and the showers are hot and powerful. Wifi is available, it cost us 10 euros for the week - the connection as ok. The site owners are really friendly and helpful and they take great care in the upkeep of the grounds and the on site facilities. The site was in an excellent location for exploring Finistere and there are lots of cycle routes, clearly marked, in the locality. The beach is only 3 km away and we walked there and cycled there several times. The pool was nice, it wasn't quite warm enough for it to be open air, so the fact that it has a cover that can be slid open was a bonus. We heard owls at night and there were lots of other birds around. The site was excellent value for money and we really enjoyed our stay.

Local attractions

That gorgeous beach is Treguennec, one of the best known surf spots in southern Brittany and less than three kilometres from Camping Kerlaz. Surf, swim, kitesurf and have surfing lessons here, or just stay and sunbathe on the sands; the beach's size means it doesn't usually get too busy.

Also see the local ports of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Guénolé, the fishing villages of Guilvinec and Douarnenez, the Pointe du Raz, more surf at famed Pointe de la Torche, and the old and comely city of Quimper, about 20km away.

A leisure centre is at nearby Saint-Jean-Trolimon and an equestrian centre is within a kilometre of the campsite. Finistère and Brittany also have many local festivals running throughout the summer: ask the site team for its recommendations.
