  • Family-friendly site metres from Pentrez beach and at Ménez-Hom's foot
  • A 15-minute drive from Locronan and 35 minutes from Quimper
  • Restaurant, spa, pétanque, organised entertainment and playgrounds
Swimming, sand yachting and surfing – all are to be had within 10 metres or so of family-friendly Camping Menez Bichen, a site sat next to the long and sandy Pentrez beach in Finistère, just off the Atlantic Ocean. This lush, flower-covered park is partially terraced so looks out over Douarnenez bay and is at the foot of the towering Ménez-Hom mountain. All in all, it’s a prime place for resting in stunning scenery but will also keep you busy if you’d prefer – the entertainment programme includes summer concerts and themed meals, as well as tours to cultural spots like Locronan (15 minutes’ drive) and Quimper (35 minutes). Also in high season, kids are catered for with activities aplenty (along with three play areas that are accessible all year round). Adults can look forward to pétanque tournaments, while the whole family will no doubt want to gather together for the quizzes and live shows. All sounding a bit too much? Forget getting in on the action and indulge at the spa’s hot tub and sauna instead (or, better yet, book one of the massage services). Unwinding over a meal at the on-site Bistro des Pêcheurs, which serves homemade dishes made from local produce as well as takeaway fast food like pizzas, burgers and quiches, is also an excellent plan. Eats are available to pick up in the on-site shop as well and the bar has free wifi if you need to browse the web. A supermarket is around five kilometres away from this Brittany park.

Local attractions

Beach times are easy to have when staying at this site a few metres away from the sands of Pentrez, while hikes on the Menez-Hom mountain trails are accessible within 15 minutes’ drive. On lower ground, Locronan (15 minutes' drive) is a popular village to visit for a taste of traditional Brittany – this well-preserved granite-built settlement has an old-school feel and is pedestrianised. Check out the 15th-century church, a gothic-style structure plonked in the middle of the village, then flit off to the nearby Bois de Nevet forest for wanders beside the trees. Quimper, the region’s capital (35 minutes), is a bigger place to potter around – head here for an old town full of half-timbered houses and a twin-spired cathedral. Drop by the Breton County Museum for archaeological displays as well as classic Breton costumes, then admire the locally made pottery in the Faience Museum. If you’re on hol with the kids, L'Aquashow animal park (45 minutes) is a good shout for keeping small fry amused.
