Camping La Pointe: Safari tent

General

  • Family-friendly site in a valley beside the Nantes-Brest Canal
  • A kilometre from Chateaulin on the famed Crozon peninsula
  • Garden, shop, table tennis, fresh bread, croissants and eggs for sale

Frolic in Finistère at Camping La Pointe, a site that sits pretty in a small valley with spectacular views. You can soak up the vistas here from a very pleasant position indeed: the park has a handsome garden for guests’ use – with chickens roaming freely – and is bordered by woods with red squirrels, deer and tawny owls hiding among the trees.

Cute critters spotted, head back to the park for amenities including a small shop selling essentials as well as fresh bread and croissants and an indoor communal area with a library and table tennis. The shower and toilet blocks are suitable for disabled guests, and wifi is spread over a large area to keep you connected with the outside world.

Not that you’ll have much time for web browsing: this site runs alongside Brittany’s Nantes-Brest Canal for salmon fishing, waterside walks, cycling tours and canoeing trips. Being on the outskirts of Chateaulin and at the edge of the famed Crozon peninsula, home to craggy coastlines and teeny fishing towns, it’s also well placed for days out among historic villages and on white sandy beaches.

The nearest town, Saint-Coulitz, is two kilometres away and Chateaulin is less than a five-minute drive away for your supermarket needs. Further afield, Quimper’s well-preserved old town is 25 minutes to the south.

Lovely campsite, one of the best we’ve ever stayed in. The shower block and toilets were immaculate with very roomy cubicles. We would definitely stay here again if we return to the area. Well done Vicki and Mike for providing such a great camping experience!

Fantastic site, generous and very private pitches, beautiful setting amongst trees and near the river, facilities were newly renovated and spotless, owners Mike and Vikky work tirelessly to keep this lovely campsite tidy and special, we loved the plants and private garden feel, beautiful sites and beaches to visit all nearby, great cycling along Nante Brest Canal, we loved it and appreciated the indoor games room on the not so nice days, table tennis was great fun. One of the best campsites we have stayed at in many year of camping!

Immaculate showers and toilets. Site pitches a good size and kept very neat and tidy. Friendly English couple run the site who work hard keeping everything in tip top order. Had a great crepe evening on site with food and drinks very reasonably priced. Lovely walk into the town along the canal where there are plenty of bars and restaurants

This is a great camping site, when we arrived we were taken in by the Bewilderness of it and that most pitches Have a hedged area Part secluded from others. The site has a river just over The road which we used for kayaking which was a nice touch. Daily orders for bread and pastries (which were amazing). The showers and toilets with all the extras were imacculate and Showers very spacious. On our last night there was the weekly crepe night with bar open which was a really great night. My boys favourite part of the week were the chickens, although he may have over fed them. But even with all of this I would say that the best part of this site is vikki & Mike who run it, they help out in every way Possible and make sure everyone is happy and the site well maintained, they even put us near the showers and toilets knowing we have a tent and young children which was nice.We will return

Really lovely site. Pitches were large and well defined with hedges. Showers etc were plentiful and very clean.
We received a lovely welcome and plenty of information.

Ability to order fresh baguettes, croissants etc for breakfast was a nice touch.

Easy riverside walk into Châteaulin in about 30 mins (took longer with our dog!)

An excellent site and would recommend it highly.

    Disliked:

There is a road nearby but it wasn’t very busy and the noise wasn’t intrusive during our stay.

Local attractions

Pleyben, with its famed 16th-century parish church, is 15 minutes’ drive from the site, while medieval meandering can be had in Locronan within 20 minutes, in a small town founded by an Irish missionary.

Another lovely locale for a wander is the port town of Douarnenez, 30 minutes away; settle down here at one of the coffee shops to spy boats toing and froing from one of the four harbours. The port museum is the place to inspect similar vessels inside a wet dock created to simulate life at sea.

Alternatively, cross the water – without setting foot on a ship – to Tristan Island just off Douarnenez’s coast. This place of nature with a ruined fort is reachable only at low tide: sign up for a trip at the tourist office and its guides will make sure you get back to the mainland safe and sound.

To take to the ocean for real, make your way to Kervel (25 minutes away) or journey a further 15 to Plage des Sables Blancs for white sands, beach volleyball and watersports rentals. If built-up beaches aren’t your bag, the wilder Saint-Jean is a kilometre away along the coastal path.
