  • Family campsite in the grounds of a Finistère château and oyster farm
  • Carnac standing stones and Concarneau both half an hour’s drive
  • Playground, games room and chill-out area; oyster tasting on site
Heads up, lovers of châteaux, oysters and all things Breton. Camping du Château de Bélon, five minutes’ drive from Riec-sur-Bélon in Finistère, is quite the place to lay your head if you fancy the idea of staying in the grounds of a grand castle (listed as a historic monument, no less) with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of freshly harvested oysters to be sampled. This relaxed, family-friendly campsite is set on a peaceful, leafy estate of almost five acres with level grass pitches. Toddlers can have a run around on the play area, while older kids join in riotous sessions of table football and ping-pong in the games room. And it’s not all about rushing around either; there’s a communal TV room and chill-out barn with sofas and dining tables too. Visit the estate’s Huîtrières du Château de Bélon oyster farm for tastings and direct sales of oysters, and if there is anything you’d like to know about the surrounding area, just pop in to see the friendly staff in reception.

Liked: The location was good & the owners seemed charming.

Disliked: Not suited to non-summer conditions. Mud access road, grass not cut which hid litter. The sanitation block was dated.

From the manager: Bonjour Monsieur, Nous sommes vraiment navrés pour la météo qui a été très mauvaise lors de votre séjour et espérons que vous aurez l'occasion de revenir avec le soleil. Bonne continuation,

Local attractions

Only a woodland stroll away from your pitch, the Bélon riverside (10 minutes’ walk) is a popular spot for sunset views over bobbing boats. If you prefer a longer walk, it’s lucky old you as the site has direct access to the GR34 long-distance footpath. Known as the Custom Officers’ Path (Le Sentier des Douaniers), it wends its way around the Brittany coastline from the bay opposite Mont-Saint-Michel to Saint-Nazaire. If you’re keen to learn more about Breton history, head to the Carnac Alignments to see more than 3,000 standing stones and tombs dating from around 6,000 years ago, or tour the megaliths at La Trinité-sur-Mer (both an hour’s drive). When (and if) you’ve had your fill of Breton oysters, try some other local specialities: crêpes savoury or sweet (a real treat for the kids) can be sampled in the seafront cafés of Concarneau (half an hour). If you’re partial to Breton cider, head to a waterside bar in pretty, medieval Pont-Aven (10 minutes), where you can also buy buttery galette biscuits and tour the workshops that make them.
