General

  • Yurt village less than 10 minutes' walk from the coast
  • On the Bay of Morlaix and a short drive from Roscoff
  • Play area and lots of wooded and grassy space

Fuss-free holidaying on the coast is what this place is all about: you’re a mere 10 minutes’ amble from la mer, and all you need to bring to this gorge green glampsite is your beach towel, a trashy tome and your good self.

Comfy, cosy and highly stylish, the Mongolian yurts at Camping Mer et Yourtes might well fool you into thinking you’re over in East Asia when, in actual fact, you’ve landed yourself a spot in France’s fab Finistère department. Settled snugly in the Bay of Morlaix, not far in the car from the spectacular city of Roscoff, you’re within easy reach of all sorts of holiday options like boat trips to the Île de Batz and sampling freshly caught seafood eats around the pretty old coastal commune of Roscoff.

Accommodation at the site is all in yurts, constructed using a wooden trellis and clad for extra warmth with yak’s wool, felt and cloth. Each yurt has a central roof opening for lots of natural light and air. Prettily painted in orange, these yurts are sumptuously decorated with traditional East Asian symbols and motifs and furnished most splendidly with traditional Mongolian furniture too. For extra comfort factor, each of the yurts are kitted out with kitchen utensils, a fridge and a microwave, heating and outdoor furniture too, so it’s easy to get stuck right into relaxing on site as soon as you return from exploring Finistère’s fine and highly scenic coastline.

There’s heaps of grassy roaming space here for tiddlers to run about in and let off steam around, and a playground too should they feel like a swing or a clamber. While they’re off thoroughly entertaining their small selves, grownups can settle back to sample an assortment of locally caught seafood specialities at the on-site restaurant, washing morsels down with a crisp local tipple or two.

Local attractions

Seafood specialities aplenty are in this site’s local area: the coastal commune of Roscoff – famed for its pretty timber-framed buildings and boat-filled harbour – as streets filled to the gills with good restaurants serving locally caught fish and other regional produce, and you can easily sample traditional Breton crêpes around the town too. Aside from eating, other popular pastimes here include ambling around art galleries and shopping for little Finistère mementos among its many gift shops.

Staying in Roscoff, head to the port for a swift boat trip out to the Île de Batz; most visitors make a beeline for its exotic garden, on the southeast of the island, as it’s famed for housing more than 2,000 plant species from five of the world’s seven continents and a cracking collection of palm trees too, as well as a Bronze Age burial site once unearthed by the park’s creator. Aside from this, other of the island’s many draws include lots of lovely beaches, leisurely coastal walks and smashing views from the top of its 19th-century lighthouse.

If you’re in the market for a preen and a pamper, several thalassotherapy centres are within a short drive, a good one being over in Roscoff with sea-view massage suites for max relaxation factor. Otherwise, head over to Morlaix and Saint-Pol-de-Léon to stroll around narrow French streets, sample more local gastronomy and take in a few more urbanised sights.
