  • Small family site overlooking Douarnenez Bay and near a national park
  • Surfing, sand yachting, kite surfing, paragliding and more nearby
  • Heated indoor pool, Jacuzzi, fishing and bouncy castle
You'd probably have a stay at this spiffing site for the pool alone. But Camping Ker Vella near Plomodiern in Finistère, between the Crozon peninsula to the north and Cap Sizun to the south, overlooks the clear blue waters of Douarnenez Bay too, with access to the sea 500 metres from base for dips and basking. Kitesurfing, sand yachting, paragliding and sailing are all close by at the likes of Saint-Nic and Plonévez-Porzay, and a surf school is 20 minutes’ drive away. Covering two hectares, this well-maintained site has pitches separated by hedgerows and shaded by poplar trees, all looked after by friendly Alain and his attentive team. There are excellent facilities too, such as a Jacuzzi and a heated indoor pool; a neighbouring paddling pool; a miniature golf course and multisports pitch. A play area and a bouncy castle are on site too, as well as a games room, a TV room, a pétanque pitch (where weekly afternoon tournaments take place just for fun) and an outdoor ping pong table to keep all plenty amused. Bike hire and fishing are also available. During high season, dine on homemade pizzas made by the skillful crew over at the park’s restaurant-pizzeria; several times during the week the on-site crepier provides guests with tasty salty or sweet specialities too.

Local attractions

After pootling or watersporting around the Breton coast, have a drive of 10 minutes or so to the Armorica Regional Natural Park, for piles of old sites as well as many museums, traditional villages and historical centres. Highlights include the villages of Argol, with its museum dedicated to historic methods of flax and wool production; Landévennec, with its Benedictine abbey and maritime museum; and Le Faou, a tiny fishing village with its 16th-century Church of Saint-Sauveur. The city of Brest, with its huge Pont de Recouvrance drawbridge, medieval Tanguy tower, Océanopolis aquarium and botanical gardens is less than an hour’s drive from base. For fishing, the 4,500 kilometres of waterways and lakes and 1,200 kilometres of coastline that fringe the Finistère department provide plenty of excellent angling – you can fish in the sea from the nearby beach, or if you’re more of a freshwater fisher the lakes of Saint-Michel and Drennec are both within an hour’s drive.
