General

  • Family-friendly site five minutes' walk from a sandy beach
  • 30-minute drive from the harbour and walled Old Town of Concarneau
  • Indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools and paddling pool

Cor, that beach is a bit of a stunner, innit? A four-kilometre hunk of white-sanded loveliness – the sort that’ll fuel your daydreams for many a rainy day to come. And it’s got a lifeguarded area, watersports and rockpools for the pottering pleasure of les petits. It doesn’t get much better than that...

Well, perhaps it does get ever so slightly better if you choose to settle at Camping Le Helles, as it’ll then be a mere five-minute saunter from the site, down a pretty little tree-lined footpath. Rather fably, this means you can stroll on down there whenever the fancy takes you (or back again to retrieve forgotten rubber rings, suncream, fishing nets and the like).

If it’s merely a swim you seek, you’ll not even need to trot that far, as the site has its own pools – an outdoor one with a sizeable sunbathing/small-person supervision area, and an indoor one with a fun paddling pool and heated waters to keep things balmy even if the weather takes a turn.

Need a break from the aquatic amusement? Dry off and set up for a game of table tennis or pétanque, perhaps getting in some proper practice to ensure you’ll be a contender in the site’s tournaments, held weekly in the summer season. Or give in to natural holiday vibes and settle down for a wee rest while the kids continue the fun times at the playground, on the trampoline or some bonkers bouncing on the inflatable castle.

When it comes to feeding time, you’re around a 10-minute walk from the restaurants and cafés in Sainte-Marine, or you can light up a barbie on site to cook your own over coals. All the necessaries can be acquired in the site’s shop, the little shops in town or at the supermarket (a 10-minute drive away). If you’re around on a Wednesday, call into town to poke around in the market for fresh produce; at other times don’t forget to order your bread and croissants on site to be delivered ready for morning devouring. In high season you can also make life super-easy by picking up light meals from the snack bar.

Other useful amenities on site include a launderette with coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers, free wifi access and a toilet block with spankingly clean showers, a baby bathroom and accessible facilities.

Still not quite convinced? ‘Possibly the best site we have experienced after many years of campervan travel’ is the verdict of one previous happy guest – high praise indeed.

Nice warm welcome from the owner / manager who takes the time to explain the site and surrounding areas, well kept large pitches, clean toilet / shower block and a very nice heated indoor swimming pool, didn't try the outdoor pool as the weather was a bit chilly during our stay but looked in top condition. Why this site has only a 3 star rating is questionable, I have stayed on 5 star sites that were nowhere near the standard of this one. I will definitely be going back again, well done and thanks for a very nice stay.

Nice clean site, well organised, good sized pitches with electric points readily available. Pools and facilities very clean and well maintained. Staff helpful. Not far to the beach and town (Saint Marine).

    Disliked:

Water points at ends of rows of pitches so if in the middle hose struggled to reach motorhome.

The site was very well maintained and well organised.

The pizzas at the cafe/bar were really good as were the crepes. The service was good. The pitches were a good size and the toilet blocks were clean and the showers were great too. We did not have to queue for a shower all week and the water was always hot.

The photos on the website are a true representation of the facilities, the swimming pools were lovely and the beach access was just as described. It was a lovely location.

From the first moment we arrived after a long 8 hour drive from Calais we were greeted with warmth and good humour. My poor attempts at French were always enjoyed by Roselyne our host and between us we were able to communicate without any trouble or frustration. The quality and cleanliness of the site was excellent. The pool was fabulous, the indoor section was perfect in all weathers and the outdoor part was refreshingly chilly for the braver bather. We really enjoyed the fresh bread and pastries you could order for each morning, they had a decent selection of wine and bits and bobs in the shop. The pitch was big enough for our huge tent and seating outside, with just enough privacy. All neighbours were friendly and chilled out. Toilets and washing facilities were great - super showers - the only odd thing was that there was no hand soap or driers. The beach was a longer walk away than we imagined but it was beautiful - we didn't really have the weather for it on our stay. We had a wonderful week there. Great places to visit nearby, kids in the pool every day, well maintained site - really enjoyed ourselves.

    Disliked:

There was a lack of initial information, forcing us to throw ourselves into conversations in the shop - probably no bad thing. But info on how to order the morning bread, how to sign up for events, how the Wi-Fi worked, where the nearest super markets were would have been helpful for nervous first timers in France. But as soon as we asked all was revealed. Shame about the lack of hand soap in the washroom.

Quiet family site within a short walk to a beautiful white sandy beach and a short walk to the small harbour of Saint Marie. The harbour village has restaurants which all serve quality meals and great selections of wine and beers.

This site has both outdoor and indoor swimming pool, child friendly play area...and the best part, all quiet after 10.30pm

Would certainly return with family and grandchildren.

Local attractions

If you’d like to get out on to the sea, wander up to the sailing centre in Sainte-Marine, a 15-minute walk away – here you can hire canoes, kayaks and windsurfing kit as well as taking paddleboarding lessons to unlock the mysteries of standing up on water.

You can also get out on the waves on a boat trip over to the gorgeous Glénan Islands from Bénodet, 10 minutes’ drive away. It’s really worth heading over to this archipelago (known as the Breton Tahiti) to see the white sandy beaches and visit the nature reserve set up to protect the indigenous Glénan Narcissus. There’s also a scuba diving centre over here for those who like to sink below the surface.

Dedicated landlubbers can still make the most of the coastline by heading out on the GR 34 trail, which runs alongside the beach to reach Île Tudy in the west and Bénodet in the east. Plenty of other paths run through the area, too – along the banks of the Odet river and through the Bois de Roscouré (a 45-minute walk north of the site). If you prefer wheels for your explorations, hire electric bikes and pedal off to villages including Loctudy (half an hour away) or La Forêt Fouesnant (an hour’s cycle).

For a bit of town time, take the half-hour drive to Quimper to see the Gothic cathedral and trot around its old quarter, taking in some of the flower-lined bridges that criss-cross the river. In Concarneau, around 30 minutes away, you can see the activity at one of France’s busiest fishing ports, visit the fishing museum and try your hand at catching your own on a boat trip. Wander through the walled Old Town before walking along the coastal path to the Sables Blancs beach or taking a five-minute drive inland to the 13th-century Château de Keriolet.
