  • Family site on a farm in the Côtes d’Armor department, Brittany
  • Gardens Kerdalo 20 minutes’ drive; Abbaye de Beauport half an hour
  • Large playground; resident animals; communal kitchen; workshops
A family holiday in Brittany is always a good idea, especially when you can stay at a place like Camping et Gite La Ferme du Jaudy, on the outskirts of the village of Pommerit-Jaudy (a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk), in the Côtes d’Armor department. This peaceful, dog-friendly site on a working farm is well set up to keep inquisitive children occupied: in addition to a games room and a large play area with climbing structures and trampolines, there are resident animals to get to know, feed and pet, including pigs Poumba and Cookie, Mickey the donkey and several egg-laying chickens. Owners Laurence and Pascal also run a range of seasonal hands-on workshops (for all ages), so you can learn to make cream and butter, collect honey or produce a Breton feast. Speaking of food… Keen cooks have a fully equipped communal room at their disposal (with a fridge freezer, gas hob, microwave oven and kettle), and there’s also a communal barbecue area. Ingredients can be sourced at the on-site shop, which stocks produce from neighbouring farms, or in the village of La Roche-Derrien (10 minutes), where there’s also a bakery and a handful of restaurants. Amenities on site include a toilet block (with facilities for disabled guests), hot-water showers, a washing-up area and a launderette. There are recycling points, too (this is an environmentally friendly farm, after all, with a sustainable ethos).

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely people, very friendly, lots of different farm animals

Disliked: Only one unisex toilet, very basic and not in keeping with the website. Lots of work in progress but not there and website very misleading

Local attractions

Rhododendrons, magnolias and hydrangeas are just some of the plants at the remarkable Gardens Kerdalo (20 minutes’ drive), established in the 1960s on the banks of the Jaudy river by a Russian prince. Themed areas include the Italian Grotto, its walls decorated with shells. You’re not far from the coast here, and what a coast it is: rugged and dotted with deep coves and beaches like Plage de Poulpry (20 minutes) and Plage des Dunes (25 minutes), both with rockpools. If you enjoy a swim, head to sheltered Plage de la Tossen, in Paimpol (half an hour). On the outskirts of Paimpol, Abbaye de Beauport (half an hour) is an early 13th-century monastery with atmospheric ruins, coastline views and large grounds with orchards and marshland trails. The abbey is also a starting point for the Camino de Santiago – see if you can find the classic scallop shell on the grounds.
