  • Peaceful and shaded riverside site next to Grottes d’Azé
  • Cluny Abbey and Grottes de Blanot within 15 minutes' drive
  • Snack bar on site; 10 mins' drive from A6 motorway
It’s not often that you get to spend the night right by a tourist attraction – but that’s exactly what you’ll be able to do at Camping Grottes d'Azé, at the southern end of Burgundy. This peaceful three-acre site is right next to the Grottes d’Azé, on the edge of the village of Azé. Staying right next to the caves means that you’ll be able to get in as soon as they open in the morning, thus avoiding the crowds and perhaps allowing you to get on your way to another destination later in the day. The site is only about 10 minutes’ drive from the A6 motorway (halfway between Dijon and Lyon) so it’s a handy pick for an overnight stop and a cave tour before getting back on the road. It’s worth sticking around a little longer if you can, though, as there’s plenty to see and do in the local area, including walking trails, cycle routes, vineyard visits, châteaux – and indeed more caves… Time spent on site should be rather lovely too – the campsite is on the banks of the Mouge river and it’s a peaceful place with lots of wildlife around and shade from the trees. The swimming pool (available for an additional charge) is open during high season only. There is also a playground and a pétanque court on site for a little more activity. Amenities are also well supplied, including a launderette and bathrooms with disabled access. Time for some food? Pick up pizzas and the like from the snack bar and order your morning bread delivery for a good breakfast. You can also walk into the village centre in about 10/15 minutes for a shop, bakery or restaurant.

What customers say

This campsite offers a beautiful riverside location in a wine region, with many guests praising the friendly staff and the option of private bathrooms, described as a "game changer." Shady, spacious pitches are available, and the on-site restaurant and bar are popular. While most guests enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere, some noted issues with campsite cleanliness, particularly in shared sanitary facilities during busy periods. The nearby swimming pool has entry fees and a mandatory swimming cap requirement.

Liked Les toilettes toujours propres. À l’écoute. Rend service très facilement. Proximité de la grotte.

Disliked La piscine collée au camping mais n’appartient pas au camping et du coup, le tarif très cher de cette piscine (+de 5€).

Local attractions

Of course you’ll want to visit the Grottes d’Azé to explore the wonderful naturally sculpted underground caverns and see the well-preserved bear and lion fossils it’s become well known for. And if that’s given you a taste for such things, follow up with a trip to Grottes de Blanot (15 minutes’ drive). Back above ground there are plenty of activities to keep you busy, including biking along the green or blue cycle routes, going horse riding from Azé, climbing into the trees at Lugny Acro (five minutes) or rock climbing at Vergisson (25 minutes). And of course here in the midst of the Mâconnais vineyards there are wines to be tasted if that’s more your thing. For a taste of the area’s more recent history, head to Cluny Abbey (15 minutes), once the largest church in Christendom, or take a tour of Château de Brancion (15 minutes), up on a clifftop overlooking the medieval village.
