  • Canalside site with fishing available
  • A few minutes' drive from the ancient Roman town of Autun
  • Golf, horse riding and boating available within a few kilometres
Fishing, ambling along the canal banks or – oui oui – tracking down Burgundy wines… that's a little of what might entertain you when you're based at Camping d'Autun. This canalside site has fishing available within the grounds, as well as a couple of kilometres away. It’s all a few minutes’ drive from the (fab) Roman commune of Autun, one of France’s designated Towns of Art and History, and east of the 173,000 hectares of lakes, farmland and woodland of the (also fab) Morvan Regional Natural Park. Golf, horse riding, sailing and boating are all available within a few kilometres. When you’re not fishing, wandering along the canal banks, ticking off yet another sample on your Burgundy wine list or sampling the local flavours at restaurants in the town, a good selection of activities is to hand on site in July and August, ranging from a kids’ club to sports tournaments and regular music nights and entertainment. Other facilities include a small grocery shop and a bread service available from mid-May. The site also has a laundry room and a heated toilet block.

Electric grass pitch

Disliked: Geen mooi weer

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Für uns ein optimal ruhiges Plätzchen an der Hecke, saubere Sanitäranlagen, frisches Frühstück Baguette.

Disliked: Schade, dass es das Baguette erst ab 9.00 Uhr gibt.

Local attractions

The spectacular town of Autun, a former Roman imperial province founded as Augustodunum by one Augustus C, is within a few minutes’ drive of the site. It’s still best known these days for its Roman centre, including the two ancient gates of the Porte St-André and the Porte d'Arroux, the two remaining walls/ faces of the temple of Janus, viewable from Camping d'Autun, and the ruins of a spectacular theatre that was able to seat 17,000 people. Autun was founded for a Gallic tribe, who had Bibracte as its central town. This one, half an hour’s drive away, is also well worth a roam around for its ancient remains: Bibracte is a vital spot in Europe for those interested in Celtic civilisation and has a museum and interactive exhibits dedicated to these times. You can also access cycling and hiking trails within a kilometre; fishing, boating, sailing and pedalo rides within two; horse riding within three and a nine-hole golf course within four. About 45 minutes’ drive away in Morvan Regional Natural Park, Lac des Settons is the scenic spot for more watersports, a sandy beach and angling for pike and perch.
