  • Normandy site in Sainte-Mère-Église with playground and shop
  • WW2 museum five minutes' walk; Utah beach and museum 15-minute drive
  • Play area, massages, bike hire and shop with the site's own craft beer
Bag a berth on this Normandy spot for boat trips, craft beers and beaches with a big story. History is everywhere of course, but the little Lower Normandy town of Sainte-Mère-Église has higher concentrations than most, as one of the first towns liberated on D-Day in 1944. Away from the drama, but five minutes from the centre of town, Camping de Sainte-Mère-Église is a quiet, well-kept base from which to explore a region rich in history, nature and grand vistas. The site is lined with trees and hedges, with plenty of room to roam around. There's a playground too, bike hire for when you're ready to explore... and massage bookings available as well. After all that biking and relaxing, amble over to pick up some local produce at the on-site shop, including Sainte-Mère-Église’s own very quaffable craft beer. The town is dotted with memorials of the D-Day landings; start off at the Airborne Museum (five minutes’ walk or two minutes’ drive from the site) for a fine introduction. The famed landing beaches of Utah and Omaha, and their museums, are 15 minutes and half an hour’s drive away.

Local attractions

Fortunately, the beaches of northern France have returned to their original purpose, and Ravenoville (15 minutes’ drive) with its rows of coloured houses and wide sands is a fine example. Sitting on an inlet surrounded by wetlands, Carentan (20 minutes) has walking trails to the sea, and is the place to book a boat trip through the marshes. Walks through the teeming and diverse landscape of the Parc Naturel des Marais du Cotentin start from the park centre at Saint Côme du Mont. If you’re itching to get on the water after all that, the activity centre at Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte (20 minutes) will soon have you canoeing and kayaking down the Douve. For thrills of a higher kind, the forest centre there has treetop walks, climbs and rope swings. After all that hurtling about, take a ramble round Bayeux (40 minutes), a handsome town whose medieval character escaped the war unscathed. There’s a well-regarded D-Day Museum here too, but most of the footfall of course is for the legendary tapestry which tells the tale of a different invasion. (Check before you visit though, it might have gone to Britain...)
