General

  • Seaside site 20 metres from the D-Day landing beach of Utah
  • Heated indoor pool, outdoor pool and paddling pool
  • Mini farm, bouncy castle, playground, games room and trampolines

For a spot 20 metres from Utah beach among the spectacular setting of World War II’s Normandy Landings and, of course, easy access to Normandy sands, swims and watersports, bagging oneself a pitch at Camping Le Cormoran comes highly recommended.

As well as having a splendid setting among the smashingly scenic lands of the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Natural Regional Park for an excellent variety of outdoorsy pursuits such as hiking, horse riding and fishing, this site’s locale also has lots of historic spots to explore without guests needing to venture too far, including the Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Eglise and the German battery at Azeville, both within 15 minutes’ drive.

But when remaining very comfortably on base, there’s more than plenty to do too: when water-based activity calls, park yourself alongside the pretty pool to bask under the Normandy skies, or during times of inclement weather (or to save your skin from the French sun), switch instead to the pool indoors.

For times when extra energy needs to be expended out of the water, stir oneself to get sportif at the pétanque court or the multisports area, where you’ll happily find all the necessary facilities for games of football, volleyball and basketball, or head to the fitness area to raze a few croissant-induced calories.

Small peeps have plenty more to do besides with a paddling pool, a playground with a bouncy castle and trampolines for energised bouts of boinging around, pedal karts to pootle (/race) about in, and a games room with table football, a pinball machine and ping pong tables at which to challenge new pals to a sporting dual.

And there’s yet more: littlies who regularly profess their fondness for all things furry will likely be beside themselves when they discover the site’s mini farm, which is where they can totter over to to make the acquaintance of its resident goats and other highly cute critters.

Aside from all the above, activities for offspring of all ages to get wholly stuck into are arranged during the summer months, as are activities for all ages to pursue, from horse riding, archery and fishing excursions to concerts, dances and themed evenings.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including archery and horse riding are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The variety of things to do on site. Both pools were very good. Children enjoyed the trampolines and inflatables. Facilities such as tennis court were easy to book and free. The goats were a very pleasant surprise, especially that you could go in with them. A great idea were the barbecues dotted around near the pitches which were available for anyone to use. The shower and washing facilities were kept very clean (twice a day). Pitches were a very good size. Various entertainments available at the bar. There were even local traders on different days selling products from charcuterie, cheese, wine and fruit and veg.

I you like military history there is plenty to visit within a reasonable distance of the campsite. There is a very good supermarket (SuperU) in St. Mere Eglise where you can find pasteurised milk rather than UHT. Wi-fi is available at reasonable prices and the time is only used up when you are connected to the system.

    Disliked:

One improvement would be more umbrellas/parasols around the outdoor pool.

Three things that were beyond the control of the campsite but to be aware of:

Unavoidable was the start of the hunting season on August 21st with the odd early morning bout of shooting ducks, but not a big problem but be warned.

Being so close to the beach on some nights the sound of the waves on the beach was quite significant.

There was also some sort of party with fireworks towards St. Mere Eglise with clearly audible music into the early hours.

Local attractions

The famed sands of Utah Beach are a mere 20 metres away, and several other historic D-Day sites are also a cinch from Camping Le Cormoran, including the Airborne Museum and annual D-Day commemorations in Sainte-Mère-Eglise, the German batteries near the village of Saint-Marcouf, and the seafront Utah Beach Museum. Further afield, Cherbourg’s port and the 17 aquariums and sea-themed exhibitions of the town’s maritime museum are well worth the 40-minute drive.

Peeps partial to a spot of putting are also well catered to around here, with the spectacularly scenic 18-hole course of Golf de la Presqu'île du Cotentin an easy 13-minute drive away in Fontenay-sur-Mer, with a green that stretches across 60 acres and provides smashing vistas out over Hougue Bay.

For outdoor activity elsewhere, Camping Le Cormoran’s setting among the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Nature Park provides plenty of options: there’s an overnight carp fishing trail at Chef-du-Pont, 20 minutes away by car, and a horse riding centre in Sainte-Mère-Eglise should one fancy hopping atop a horse for an equine adventure. Watersports are within easy reach too, with sand yachting on Utah beach available from a centre in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont.
