  • Indoor and outdoor pools, hot tub, bar, snack bar and bouncy castle
Grand? Large? Very big indeed? These can all describe your lengthy to-do list with a stay at Camping Le Grand Large right on a river among the Saint Omer marshlands: boating and waterside walks are available right from the grounds, and its Pas-de-Calais setting is nicely nifty for days out and about around France's north coast, beaches and the UNESCO-listed marshlands. Manche seaside and family holidays are properly sorted here, a coastal resort on the Cotentin Peninsula with direct access to Normandy sands and watersports. Watersports, sailing and fishing are all nearby; a surf school is close to the site, and you'll be able to easily access activities like hiking, cycling, mountain biking, golf and horse riding in these coastal surroundings. For food – always an essential element of a French holiday – several farmers' markets are nearby and fishing villages famed for their seafood hauls are a short drive away. Le Grand Large is on the west coast of Cotentin with direct access to Sciotot beach, four kilometres from the nearest village of Les Pieux. It has indoor and outdoor pools, a hot tub, games room, a TV room, pétanque courts and a play area with a trampoline and a bouncy castle. Small eats and tasty cocktails are covered at the bar and snack bar; pick up any essentials you need as well as fresh local produce and bread at the site shop. Among the amenities are accessible washrooms with toilets and hot showers, a washing-up area and a launderette with washing machines and tumble dryers. Internet access is also available to guests.

Local attractions

The local village of Les Pieux has a market every Friday and another is on Mondays at Bricquebec, 14 kilometres away. Sciotot beach a kilometre or so away has two spectacular main swimming spots, both lifeguarded in July and August, and a beach stretching over two and a half kilometres. Surfing and sailing are available all year round. Within driving distance, the historical port town of Cherbourg 27 kilometres away is worth a look for its huge Cité de la Mer (City of the Sea) tourist building, and the Liberation Museum, displaying stories of World War II from the local people. Alongside the local villages, the regional seafood can be sampled at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, the seaside resort famed for its oysters, 51 kilometres away, and Barfleur 56 kilometres away, where you can try piles of plump locally farmed mussels. The Regional Natural Park of Cotentin and Bessin is 60 kilometres away; for scenic hikes, the rural village of Carentan and the beginning of the GR 223 hiking trail is within 63 kilometres.
