The Vikings were lords of the high seas, but they’re not going to be the ones ruling the waves at Camping les Vikings, a site just 10 minutes from the Barneville-Carteret beaches in Normandy. Less than a kilometre from the ocean, Camping les Vikings is a haven for watersports enthusiasts. Try your hand at windsurfing, explore the Barneville-Carteret area by paddleboard, or take on a bigger challenge by learning how to sail a catamaran. You don’t have to leave the site if you want to get active – you can play handball, football or volleyball on the multisports pitch, have a go at pétanque, or take an exercise class by the pool. Kids can run riot at the Kids’ Club, joining in on treasure hunts or playing some outdoor games. After you’ve worked up an appetite, call to the on-site bar-restaurant where you can order food and drinks, or sit under the Normandy sun with snack or ice cream in hand if you’re craving something lighter. Don’t worry if you’re not feeling sociable – you can pick up your food from the restaurant, take it back to your pitch and chow down in peace and quiet. If you’d prefer to fend for yourself, barbecues and planchas are welcome on site – you can even hire one if you aren’t able to bring your own.

Local attractions

You don’t have to go far from Camping les Vikings to get your fill of the Normandy coast. Along the beaches of Barneville-Carteret, you can wander the dunes, walk the cliffs and take a tour of the Carteret lighthouse. While the beaches near the site are spectacular, it’s the beaches on the other side of the headland that Normandy is most well known for. Utah Beach, one of the D-Day landing sites, is less than an hour from the site, and the surrounding area has plenty of World War II sites to visit, including the village of Saint-Mère-Eglise and the D-Day Experience museum at Saint-Côme-du-Mont. But this region of Normandy isn’t just known for war. Close to Utah Beach are Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Tatihou Island. At low tide, you can walk out to the island and explore its maritime museum, shipbuilding workshop, ornithological observatory and botanical gardens, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Vauban Tower. If you’re worried about missing low tide, an amphibious boat also makes the crossing from Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. Ten minutes from the site, indulge your sweet tooth at La Maison du Biscuit, devoted to the making of some of the biscuits Normandy is famous for, including petit fours, financiers and sablés. Take a seat in the tea room, sip a hot drink, and try some of La Maison’s fare.
