There is something so enchanting about woodland explores, roaming around pretty trees and hearing the rustling of leaves… and at L'Etape en Forêt, you can combine forest adventures with a stay right in the thick of it. The family-friendly site is in the 1,500-hectare Normandy forest of Saint-Sever-Calvados, with woodland, rolling hills, valleys and streams to navigate, so it’s a hit with the wildlife and a real treat for walkers, cyclers and anglers… but there’s 10 hectares of greenery to navigate on site first. And what better way to start your forest hols than with a go on L'Etape en Forêt’s treetop ropes course? With four difficulty levels, it caters for the whole gang, and there are a few play areas closer to the ground so the tiddlers can join in the action. There’s more sporty stuff around the site, too, including pétanque, table tennis and archery, as well as a sandy area that's fab for a game of beach volleyball or football. When the time comes to amble off into the woods, there are plenty of marked trails to follow, and bikes can be rented on site if you’d rather explore on wheels. There’s also a pond stocked with fish a short stroll from base. All that effort requires some sustenance, so the restaurant at L'Etape en Forêt is handy; tuck in while relaxing on the terrace – it’s on stilts, so you’ll get a fine view of the surrounding forest.

Local attractions

For more outdoorsy shenanigans, make your way to the Souleuvre Viaduct (half an hour's drive) for things like ziplining, rope swinging and bungee jumping. Or make a splash at Lake Dathée (15 minutes) with various watersports. For kid-friendly days out, lead the gang to Ange Michel leisure park (50 minutes), with energetic things like bumper boats, karting and tobogganing; Raptor Park (50 minutes), an indoor place with laser games, miniature golf, trampolines and rollerskating; or Parc Festyland theme park (an hour). If animal sightings are the order of the day, head to Zoo de Champrépus, Zoo de Jurques (both 35 minutes) or Alligator Bay (55 minutes). L'Etape en Forêt is also a good base if you fancy heading to the coast. The seaside resort of Granville is 55 minutes away – as well as a beach, there’s a Christian Dior museum here for label lovers – while Mont Saint-Michel and its abbey are about an hour. You can also visit the D-Day landing beaches, which are all about an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away. And, for more history, the trio of the Bayeux Tapestry Museum, Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy and the MAHB – Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History are an hour’s drive away.
