One might say that La Porte Camping, a small site a five-minute drive from Noues de Sienne, opens the door to a great family experience in the Calvados department of north-western France. How so? Well, first of all, the site is at the end of a lane with no through traffic, which means a rather remote vibe and a blissful feeling of quiet. The children can play with the family dog or shoot hoops on the expansive grassy meadow, and they also have access to a playground with swings and a small climbing frame. Meanwhile, older kids might make new friends around the ping-pong table in the games room. While the offspring relax and forget all about school and homework, the grown-ups still have to be grown-ups and think about stuff like food and cooking. Handily, the site has an outdoor (but sheltered) communal kitchen with fridge and freezer, a microwave and a range of pots and pans, plus a washing-up station. Picnic tables around the site make it possible for the family to eat together under the stars. Want to check out the local cuisine? There are restaurants (and shops, including a bakery) in Noues de Sienne, plus a couple of dining options along or near the D524 road (less than five minutes’ drive). A couple of lakes within a 15-minute drive (Étangs du Vieux Château and Lac de la Dathée) are great for picnics and walks with the dog, but it’s not possible to swim in them, so if you fancy a dip, it’s best to hit the Normandy coast and beaches like Donville-les-Bains (45 minutes).

Local attractions

The seaside resort of Granville (45 minutes’ drive) is the birthplace of fashion designer Christian Dior, and his childhood home – a pink mansion overlooking the sea – is now a museum displaying some of his elegant creations. Peacocks and ducks roam around the Parc du Val ès Fleurs on the outskirts of town. Mont Saint-Michel (50 minutes) is a world-famous tidal island topped by a mighty abbey with slender Gothic spires.
