  • Peaceful pitches on an orchard farm 20 minutes’ drive from Bayeux
  • Omaha beach 10 minutes’ drive; bunkers and D-Day museum five minutes
  • Free tastings of farm products like ciders; brewery with craft beers
This Lower Normandy orchard farm is no ordinary place. La Ferme du Lavoir is right in the middle of historic D-Day territory. The Omaha D-Day museum and World War II bunkers are within five minutes’ drive of the site, and the famed Omaha landing beach is just a 10-minute drive away too. Here, you’re certainly in a prime position to learn about the World War II D-Day invasion first-hand. However, stays don’t have to be entirely history-focused, as guests have the chance to have a free tasting of top-notch farm-made products like apple juices, ciders and calvados brandy. For those who are thirsty after a full day of visiting the local bunkers and beaches, there are also craft beers for sale at the on-farm brewery, and they’re always kept cool and fresh in the fridge. Set just outside the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Natural Park – a place very worth visiting for cycling, boat trips, birdwatching and walking – the farm is in a quiet area away from the busy tourist neighbourhoods. A supermarket is just a two-minute drive away, and lively Bayeux (of Bayeux Tapestry fame) is a 20-minute drive away. It's a very peaceful site, with two toilets and showers, but no sink for washing dishes, nor any fancy laundry facilities. Handily for those visiting from over the Channel, the owner of La Ferme du Lavoir is English-speaking, having lived for 13 years in Oxfordshire as a child.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked A lovely stay in an apple orchard farm. They make all their own beers, ciders, jams and other goods. Friendly staff and a simple procedure to get in and out. Plenty of space as well.

Disliked Water button on shower is a push button but doesn't continue spraying without your hand on the button, not even for a second.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Quiet location with an easy short ride to the American Cemetery at Omaha beach. Easily booked and paid for online. Self sufficient type of pitch with standard electric supply and European connection. Basic services for the emptying of the w.c. cartridge and grey water tank. Clean toilets and showers on site. A basic farm site producing cider as a main activity (which should most definitely be tried - excellent taste.) All in all a site we would return to.

Local attractions

Here to see the historic D-Day remnants? Some good starting points are the D-Day Omaha Museum (five minutes’ drive), which has thousands of World War II objects collected by one devoted family, and the Overlord Museum (10 minutes), a collection of mighty tanks, vehicles and guns used during the Allied Landings. The D-Day sites don't end there, of course, as a quick glance at local maps will tell you. Drive to the Maisy Battery (15 minutes) to take a walk through two kilometres of German trenches or to Pointe du Hoc (15 minutes) to see where U.S. Army Rangers scaled 100-foot cliffs to capture influential German batteries. The Longues-sur-Mer battery (25 minutes) is also within striking distance; its four German 150mm artillery pieces will surely impress. La Ferme du Lavoir is also a handy little spot for other outings, especially those into the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Natural Park (from five minutes) or medieval Bayeux (20 minutes). The old town in Bayeux has scenic half-timbered houses and cobbled streets… and, if you didn't already know, the riverside town is home to the 68-metre-long Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of the 1066 Norman Conquest of England.
