It's pretty central France around here. Which means you're in gleefully simple reach of a whole heap of things to see and do from Camping Sauxillanges des Prairies D'Auvergne: it's in one national park and close to another, for a start, and is about an hour from both the Vulcania theme park and hang gliding and paragliding at splendid Puy-de-Dôme. Too far for a totally relaxed time? The site's on the banks of the Eau-Mère river (fishing, riverside cycling and gentle strolls, but of course), is among countryside walks, and is three kilometres from the Bois de Bord forest. Horse riding is five kilometres away, and if you don't want to travel to Puy-de-Dôme to launch yourself off into the atmosphere on a paragliding trip, you can try it too about 22 kilometres away at Montaigut-le-Blanc. Set near the town of Sauxillanges in the Puy-de-Dôme department of the volcanic Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Camping Sauxillanges des Prairies D'Auvergne is a short drive from Issoire and five kilometres from Usson. It's a spacious and family-friendly site, welcoming groups, and has an outdoor pool and a play area, as well as evening entertainment in summer, table tennis, and courts for volleyball, basketball and tennis. There's no shop, but a farmer's market is nearby.

Local attractions

Camping Sauxillanges des Prairies D'Auvergne is on the western edge of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park, and about 20 kilometres to the east of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, the biggest in France. As you'd expect, outdoor days galore are all around here, and townie types are sorted too with beaut communes like Usson, Montpeyroux and Issoire within easy reach. A circular route around the Livradois-Forez park takes in urban areas including Billom, Thiers, Chateldon, Courpiere, Olliergues and Ambert. Montpeyroux, Usson and Issoire are all worth a day out each: Montpeyroux for its spectacular views and 13th-century tower, and Usson for its 12th-century church, volcano side setting and 'organ' cliffs (why they're called that will be a cinch to see when you get there). At Issoire, a few kilometres south of Usson, there's a 12th-century church, colourful buildings, and a belltower to climb up for town views. Totes worth the travel time at 63 kilometres is Puy-de-Dôme, the extinct volcano rising 1,464 metres to give spectacular views along the Chaine des Puys volcanic range.
