What’s on your wish list for a smashing hol? Mountain views? Heated pool? Freshly baked bread and croissants to start the day... and a cheese shop nearby? If these all sound appealing, say oui, oui and oui again to Camping Le Chanset. Surrounded by woods and looking out towards the peaks of the Auvergne volcanoes, this is a peacefully vibed place, a 10-minute promenade from the village of Ceyrat and its bars, restaurants, baker, butcher and cheese shop. On site, remain horizontal as much as you wish on the sun terrace, perhaps occasionally stirring yourself to cool off in the pool or to drop into the bar for a snack or drink. A TV lounge, free wifi and a library are on hand to further aid inactivity. If you’d prefer to be up and about (at least some of the time, anyway), grab your weapon of choice for a few games of miniature golf or table tennis, or whisk the kids over to the playground or sports field for some running around. In summer they can also ditch the parents entirely and join in with organised activities and games. Foodie fuel is easily sorted with the fresh croissants and other breakfast bits available in the mornings, and later on the bar-restaurant opens up for drinks, snacks and full meals. Should you prefer to chef for yourself, there’s a barbecue for guests’ use and picnic tables for alfresco feasting: pick up all the bits you need at the supermarket a three-minute drive away.

Local attractions

As you’re staying within the bounds of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural park, it would be remiss not to fully investigate the area’s geology. At 1,465 metres, Puy de Dôme (a 20-minute drive) may not be the highest in the region, but its iconic shape has helped it become one of the most popular, famed since Gallo-Roman times. There are trails galore here, with many suitable for families: intrepid hikers can climb all the way up the volcano, while more fairweather walkers can reach the top in just 20 minutes on the rack railway. While you’re in volcano territory, make the 25-minute drive to the Vulcania theme park for loads of family-friendly attractions, including animatronic dinosaurs, a 3D cinema and a tethered hot air balloon ride. With volcanic activity comes thermal waters, so those of you who hiked a long way can reward yourselves with a soak in the natural waters of Royat, a 10-minute drive from the site. Another way to experience the area’s water is to head over to Massif Wake Park, 20 minutes away, for wakeboarding, kayaking and lake swimming.
