  • Family-friendly site by the river in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon
  • A five-minute drive from Chambon-sur-Lignon river beach
  • Playground, trampoline and summer entertainment
If you were handing out points for location alone, Camping Le Lignon would most likely score very highly indeed. You’d start by noting that this family-friendly Auvergne place is in a peaceful spot right on the banks of the Lignon river, with scenic watery views all around and within easy reach of nearby fishing and beach spots… After this excellent opener you’d then start heaping further points to the tally for combining that serene vibe with being handily a mere 15-minute saunter from the shops and restaurants in the centre of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. And then just to top it all off, there’d be a good score in the bonus-points round for nearby attractions (steam train rides, an adventure park and a château are all within a 20-minute drive). The folk here aren’t replying on their setting alone though – they’ve also gone and made this a most pleasant place to stay. Pitches are pleasingly spacious and generally level, with plenty of trees around should you fancy slinking off into the shade. Low-key entertainment includes a trampoline, pétanque court and a library (with books and board games) for less clement days. In summer, the snack bar serves up breakfasts and light meals for folk who don’t fancy the wander into town, and site staff put on a few gentle family-friendly activities: karaoke, zumba classes and pétanque tournaments may well be on the menu.

Local attractions

If you’re the type who likes to travel on two wheels, bring bikes or hire on site to glide off into town or take riverside rides to get to local fishing spots and sandy beaches. For something a bit more challenging, strap the bikes to the car for the 15-minute drive to the Monts D’Ardèche Regional Nature Park for some fab mountain bike trails (or hikes, if you’d rather roam on foot). Bike skills not up to that? Try the pedal-powered contraptions on an old railway line at Vélorail du Velay (half an hour’s drive). And if the thought of even that makes you shudder, recline and watch the scenery go past on a Velay Express steam train ride, five minutes’ drive from the site. Active alfresco days are a cinch round here – there’s a golf course and an adventure park 10 minutes’ drive away, and a lakeside leisure centre within 20 minutes for watersports, fishing and miniature golf. And the history’s easily doable too: Château de Montivert is 20 minutes away and there’s an excellent model village (complete with its own mini château and steam train) 15 minutes away at the Blue Lake Park.
