Mountains? Views? Volcanoes? All sorted at Camping Le Belvédère, set among the Cantal mountains and hailed as having some of the most spectacular views in the Auvergne. This pretty place is in green surrounds, in a preserved region of ancient volcanoes, with vistas of Lake Lanau and easy access to hikes in the valleys of the Truyère and the peaks of the Cantal. Back at the site and tired out after tramping around in the hills? A sauna’s available to rest those weary muscles, as well as a heated and covered pool for lazy dips. If you’re wanting more of a workout, there’s also a weights room to hone your pecs. A playground and indoor paddling pool are on hand to please smaller members of your travel tribe, along with table football, billiards and darts… so, all in all, plenty to help get your appetite going ahead of a meal in the snack bar and restaurant (open July and August). You’ll also have a TV room to catch up on your favourite programmes and a little library where you can pick up books for reading in one of the park’s grassy outdoor areas. The site is under 10 minutes’ drive from the commune of Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère in the Cantal department and 25 from the supermarkets in Saint-Flour, the nearest town. Canyoning, canoeing and boating are all available nearby… or you could opt to take it easy with a trip to the nearby spa town Chaudes-Aigues, six kilometres away.

Local attractions

Fans of centuries-old ruins are in prime position with a stay at Camping Le Belvédère: Château d'Alleuze is 20 minutes away by car. Afterwards, follow the river as it winds towards the south to come to Lac de Grandval, 25 minutes from the park, where you can swim, sail or simply pootle around the 14th-century fortress. Always wanted to see how knives are made? You’re in luck: the metalsmiths at Forge de Laguiole are a 35-minute journey away, while Saint-Urcize is a half an hour for those who can’t get enough of fab French villages. The famed Garabit viaduct (the biggest and tallest railway arch bridge of its kind when it was built in 1884 by Gustave Eiffel) is 40 minutes from the site. It sits across the Truyère river, so the views from the top are top-notch. If you don’t mind driving for an hour and a half, you can head even further up into the clouds on a hot air ballooning trip for vistas over Aurillac’s luscious landscapes.
