  • Leafy Pyrénées-Atlantiques site 10 minutes’ drive from Lucq-de-Béarn
  • Mourenx and Navarrenx both 15 minutes’ drive; Pau 40 minutes
  • Peaceful grass pitches on a 10-hectare estate; kitchen and dining area
Fancy the idea of 10 gloriously leafy hectares at your disposal? Best pack up the car and head for Camping Maison Espalanusse, a peaceful private estate 10 minutes’ drive from the country village of Lucq-de-Béarn in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The partially shaded grass pitches are a vehicle-free zone with parking nearby, and a woodland path leads to a small river where you can have a cooling dip. While you’re largely left to your own devices, there’s a well-equipped communal ‘base camp’ set in a large outbuilding, handily comprising a kitchen with a gas stove, small oven, crockery and cooking utensils as well as an all-important coffee maker and kettle. It also has a spacious dining area and a chillout zone with cosy sofas, plus a selection of board games and outdoor activities. There’s a simple shower right next door, and laundry facilities are available for a small charge. The estate is being slowly restored and is run as an organic farm; vegetables, fruit and eggs are often for sale, and the owners can also provide basics like rice and pasta.

Local attractions

You can explore lush Pyrénées-Atlantiques woodlands on hikes straight from the pitches as they lock into local trails, or walk to remote Lac de Vielleségure in around an hour on easy paths. Alternatively, join the centuries-old Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route at historic Navarrenx (15 minutes’ drive) as it makes its way towards Spain. Navarrenx itself is certainly worth a day of exploration; you can walk round its medieval ramparts and delve into the tunnels of the Bastion des Contremines, built in the 16th century to spy on the enemy during sieges. The town sits on the Gave d’Oloron river, where you can fish for salmon between mid-March and early October. Lucq-de-Béarn (10 minutes) has a colourful Sunday produce market, while the town of Mourenx (15 minutes) is known for its modernist 1960s apartment buildings. Gorgeous Pau (40 minutes) has a good collection of art and decorative arts in its handsome château, regional Béarn cheeses for sale in the aromatic Halles de Pau market, and views to the mountains from the elegant Boulevard des Pyrénées.
