Roll up anyone (and their dogs) looking for a nearly-wild camping experience near Pa – Étape en Béarn may be just the place for you. Set on the outskirts of a small village called Barinque in the Béarn region of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, this peaceful spot has just a handful of pitches with far-reaching rural views to the foothills of the Pyrenees on the horizon. This mini-site is off grid and caters for self-sufficient motorhomes and caravans; there are basic facilities available for your use, including wifi, a water source and optional electric hook-ups for an additional charge. The pitches are all about 150 m² in size, and set a distance apart for a pleasing sense of seclusion without feeling isolated. They are deliberately not marked out so you can replicate the experience of wild camping as closely as possible. The site owners Anne and Eelco live on the other side of the field; they are far enough away from the pitches to give privacy for guests, but close enough for you to ask them any questions if necessary.

Liked Very friendly reception and farewell from Eelco, we had a lovely view of the Pyrenees. Note that there are no facilities, just water, wifi, and electricity (this was clear in the Pitchup listing).

Local attractions

Mass tourism hasn’t really reached Béarn, so you’ll be able to enjoy a wide range of activities and experiences without bumping into too many people. You can go hiking, cycling and mountain biking directly from the pitches or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, try a sky dive with mountain views from Paradise 64 Parachutisme (10 minutes’ drive). If you’d rather stick to terra firma, head for Morlaàs (15 minutes) for its spectacular vistas over the Pyrenees and stunning Romanesque church; it is a stopover on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Further afield, you can explore gorgeous and little-known Béarn towns like Oloron-Sainte-Marie (55 minutes) with its UNESCO-listed Romanesque cathedral, or admire half-timbered houses lining the Saleys River at Salies-de-Béarn (an hour). Learn about regional culture in handsome Pau (half an hour), which has a historic centre crammed with museums; the city’s role in World War II is related in the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau is known for a collection that includes paintings by Rubens, Bruegel and El Greco.
