  • Woodland family park between Lot-et-Garonne and the Dordogne
  • Heated pool and sauna, next to a restaurant and terrace
  • Huge range of activities and entertainment for all ages in summer
All hail both a foodie and a kid-friendly vibe at Bosc Negre Village de Vacances, a woodland holiday park that's surely got both (and more) fully sorted. Take the kids over to the park aquatic area on arrival, where they can splash about in their own pool (tiddlers), or venture into the main pool which gently slopes to its deep end. Both pools are in their own enclosure and securely fenced off. Then introduce them to the varied menu of the restaurant, which has a special menu for kids alongside its a la carte regional offerings, all made fresh on site using local organic produce where poss. (Veggie, vegan and discounted meals are all available too, as well as lunch, coffee and tapas.) More kid-friendly fare? A huge variety of entertainment and activity options for all ages runs in summer: archery, yoga, quizzes, arts and crafts, hiking, orienteering, water aerobics and sports comps in pétanque, football, water polo, table tennis, volleyball and the like are all on offer from a programme changing weekly. For kids more of a free-range variety, a well-equipped playground has swings, slides and climbing; for adults seeking serenity, massages are on offer too. Bosc Nègre is between Lot-et-Garonne and the Dordogne, surrounded by forest for hiking, rambling, cycling and mountain biking, and is within a few minutes' walk of the Dordogne river for family canoeing trips and waterside strolls. Local town Lacapelle-Biron is a few hundred metres away and Biron is within 10 minutes.

Local attractions

Drive five minutes or cycle the two and a half kilometres to Lacapelle-Biron's tree climbing adventure centre of Parc-en-Ciel, set over 16 hectares of forest greenery. There are eight routes to tackle, as well as an open-air pool, ziplining and miniature golf. Even reluctant small historians should like a look around the 12th-century Dordogne castle of Château de Biron, on a hiltop setting with spectacular countryside views. After that, drive 15 minutes south for the Château de Gavaudun, a ruined fortress between the Lot and Dordogne valleys. Then on to famed Château de Bonaguil (25 minutes), hailed by the Bosc Nègre team as the most handsome in the country. Take a self-guided tour (download the 'games of Bonaguil' booklet for ages six to 12 first), or have a guided tour in French throughout the year, and in French, English or Dutch in summer.
