  • Aquitaine glamping tents surrounded by lush tropical vegetation
  • A 15-minute drive from the Landes coast and its sandy beaches
  • Swimming pools, water park and beach area, plus kids' activities
There’s quite the exotic holiday vibe going on at Kampaoh Mézos – surrounded by tropical vegetation (think bamboo, banana and palm trees) and with a sandy beach area surrounding the warm waters of a lagoon on site you may think you’ve been transported off to the South Pacific. In fact, this is very much the south of France – and more specifically a location on the outskirts of the Landes village of Mézos. You can walk into the village in about 15 minutes for a shop, a bakery and a restaurant – but it’s quite likely that you won’t need to, as there are facilities on site to make life nice and easy (including a shop, a restaurant and a launderette). The camping setup here is also designed to keep things simple for guests – your tent will be ready and waiting with beds made up, towels provided and handy extras like a cool box and a heater. That means you can quickly get stuck in to the important tasks of the day, whether that’s heading out to the beaches of the Landes coast, exploring the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park or settling in for a day of leisure on site. If you choose the latter, you’ll be able to choose between the aforementioned beach and lagoon, the small waterpark and the outdoor pools with terraces for lazy days of sunbathing. In summer, there are activities and shows laid on for the kids, allowing parents a little bit of extra relaxation time on their holidays.

Local attractions

Once you’ve dipped your toes in the lagoon on site, set off for the coast and days at places like Contis-Plage (15 minutes’ drive), a small resort town where you can climb the lighthouse, try paddleboarding or sea kayaking or relax on the sheltered beach. Mimizan (20 minutes) is another good option – stop by to take in the flower-filled trails of La Promenade Fleurie before heading to one of the town’s beaches. The coast is fabulous, of course, but there’s also much to see inland – especially if you set off on walks or bike rides through the forests and wetlands of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park (20 minutes), perhaps stopping at the Écomusée de Marquèze (half an hour) to get a taste of the area’s heritage. If you don’t mind a slightly longer drive, Bayonne (just over an hour) is worth the trip – it’s a certified Town of Art and History with lots of colourful houses in its Old Town and sights including the old ramparts, the Basque Museum and the cathedral. There’s also some excellent food to try out in the city’s restaurants, market and chocolate shops.
