A far cry from lively family campsites with heaps of facilities, Le Moulin de Labeque is a small and simple motorhome area tucked away in the woods at a private 25-acre estate in the wonderful Landes countryside.
To get here you’ll drive 500 metres from the road along a gravel path to find your pitch hidden away at a fairly level area among the trees – a lovely peaceful spot to spend a few days relaxing and watching the nature all around you. Trails run into the forest surrounding the pitch area, so you’ll be able to get out for a wander and a bit of wildlife watching whenever you fancy it.
This is a fairly simple site, but it’s got a decent little list of amenities – the pitches have electric hookups and access to a drinking water tap and a small utility cabin with a compost toilet, sink and microwave. You can also pay a small extra fee to use a hot shower or washing machine.
The gate to the site is closed at night so it should be pretty secure; the owner lives about 80 metres from the pitches too so can be on hand in case of problems. The site has a small playground for the kids, and they may also enjoy looking into the fenced enclosure that’s home to chickens, geese and peacocks.
For supplies, there’s a convenience store five minutes’ drive away in Magescq and a bigger choice of shops and places to eat in Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, 15 minutes away.

Local attractions
You’ll probably want to allocate a good amount of time simply to appreciating your surroundings – perhaps taking a wander in the woods or just putting your feet up to watch the birds in the trees. Sticking with the nature theme, you may like to take the kids to Pop Corn Labyrinthe (10 minutes’ drive) or explore on an ATV outing with Rando Quad Landes (20 minutes).
Watery pursuits are all around too, whether that’s a paddleboard lesson with Supland (15 minutes), surfing at Moliets-et-Maa (20 minutes) or riding horses through the waves on a beach outing with Centre Equestre de la Prade (20 minutes).
And while it may be the full-on nature experience that drew you here, you may like to throw in a little bit of urban life from time to time, perhaps visiting the thermal spa in Saint-Paul-lès-Dax (20 minutes), sampling the ham in Bayonne (35 minutes) or soaking up the coastal glamour of Biarritz (45 minutes).
