  • Leafy and nature-filled site in the scenic Landes of Gascony
  • A 15-minute drive from Hostens lakes and an hour from Bordeaux
  • Swimming pool, hot tub, restaurant, snack bar, pond and river fishing
Chasing green, nature-filled hols with plenty of hiking and biking, hours of lazy floating, and a bit of peace and quiet? Make tracks for Camping Vert Bord'Eau, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Saint-Symphorien and half an hour from Langon in the Aquitaine. The site’s in the Landes of Gascony, the largest human-made woodland in western Europe, so getting out to explore should most definitely be the first order of the stay. Luckily, it’s a top starting point for walks and cycles, with 600 kilometres of trails just for the latter within the forest area. Days hanging about site would be well justified too, as there’s lots to keep everyone entertained, from pétanque to archery. A heated pool is there when people need to cool off, a hot tub will help unknot tired muscles, and claiming a slice of riverbank or a spot by the small pond is on the agenda for anglers. Evenings can be spent at the restaurant-snack bar next to the pool, where there’s entertainment during high season and plenty of food during low, or by borrowing a board game and retiring to pitches for a self-catered night in. (The supermarket less than two minutes’ walk away should sort essentials, and a trip to the butcher’s or market in Saint-Symphorien should manage the rest.)

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Excellent stopover site en route from Roscoff to Barcelona. (Quite near Bordeaux - Toulouse autoroute). I stayed in a large tent pitch (with just my car & dome tent ) with electricity for one night with my 14 year old son. The staff welcomed us warmly on arrival into a sedate pine forest with a nice bar and pool area. A large Intermarche supermarket is across the road and only a short stroll to stock up on groceries. It closes at 7.30pm and opens at 9am most days. The diesel was twenty cents per litre cheaper also than the motorway stops so I filled my tank for the long drive to Barcelona in the morning. I’d love to return to the smell of the pine forest again and to spend a bit more time there. A proper campsite for those who like a natural setting and the slow pace of the French countryside if staying for a longer stay. Bikes not needed for the site itself but would be suitable if cycling away from the area. Good playground & basketball court also. The facilities were really clean and the showers hot with no queues or tokens needed. Generally no fuss! So if you want a bit of peace and not a large scale commercial holiday park this would be an excellent choice for a relaxed family stay or solo traveller.

Disliked: No bins beside wash-up area which means having to bring rubbish separately to the entry of the site for disposal. No toilet seats on the bowls or toilet roll supplied but the toilets were clean and fresh.

Local attractions

History buffs will be particularly well served round here: the spectacular former home of Toulouse-Lautrec, Château Malromé, is a 40-minute drive from base; the impressive Château de Cadillac (a ducal house and, later, a women’s prison) is 35 minutes away, and the moated Château de la Brède, the medieval Château Roquetaillade, the royal Château Cazeneuve and the ruined Château Villandraut are all handily with 30 minutes. Not au fait with castles? Maybe if the visit comes with some vin, it’ll be more of a draw… If oui, try the tour and tasting at Château Yquem (25 minutes away) or turn backs on châteaux altogether with a trip to the towering Collegiale Notre Dame d’Uzeste, 15 minutes from base. Well-timed stays may make Uzeste doubly appealing, as it’s also the location of a jazz and musical improv (and poetry, and theatre, and literature) festival. If that doesn’t hit the right note, perhaps Musicalarue – a three-day event in Luxey, 20 minutes from the site – will better fit the bill. Of course, sometimes all a holiday requires to be perfect is time spent splashing about... the nearest sandy stretches are an hour from base; more controlled watery days can be had at two waterparks within the same distance, and the five Hostens lakes are even closer (15 minutes) for non-salty swims.
